CCTV footage that surfaced on Wednesday, May 22 captured a lioness gaining entry into a palatial home in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County and escaping with what appeared to be the family's black dog.
At Elmeut Estate heading to Maasai Lodge in Rongai, the lioness was captured on Tuesday night, May 21 at 10.00 pm creeping up to the palatial home within the neighbourhood but its presence automatically triggered the security lights. It was unfazed by this, however.
The big cat, in defiance of the laws of Physics, jumped up to the top of the perimeter wall and appeared to be startled by the household's family dog barking within the compound.
It however regained its momentum and appeared to calculate its next move before leaping downwards and into the compound.
Here is the video:
Minutes later, the lioness reemerged with the dog in its mouth and dragged it across the neighbourhood. One would have assumed that the lioness may have killed the dog before escaping with it.
Nonetheless, it stood still, perhaps waiting for the dog to choke to death before walking casually off the view of the CCTV camera, with the dog in tow.
According to some of the residents who shared their experiences with journalists, cases of dogs vanishing at night have increased in the recent past with footage from such incidences showing that lionesses on the loose from the national park in Rongai were behind the disappearances.
The almost 2-minute video went viral, after which a section of Kenyans called upon the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to intervene and ensure the wild animal is captured and taken back to the national park.
This is now turning out to be a common experience with Rongai residents; a lion stalking residences in the area, with the close proximity to the Nairobi National Park and human encroachment all to blame for numerous sightings of lionesses.
On July 17, 2023, a lioness was spotted by CCTV cameras outside a residence in Rongai, Kajiado County right before suspected thieves staged a daring robbery at the residential home.
The video showed the female big cat gracefully prowling near the residence along an isolated Murram road and stopping just a few metres from the gate, presumably to observe the foreign surroundings she had encountered.
However, one hour before the wild animal was spotted, the gate to the residence was opened and out from the blue emerged three unidentified thievery suspects, one of whom was armed with a gun.
The lead suspect appeared to fire at a watchman manning the residence at close range before he and his colleague gained access to the home, followed closely behind by another one of the robbers.
This latest development comes after KWS issued an alert on lions roaming in Lang'ata Constituency, which is not far from Rongai.
On May 16, KWS urged the residents to stay vigilant and report any cases of wild animals roaming to the agency through contact details availed on various channels such as the official KWS website.
A day after the alert was issued, KWS revealed that there was displacement of wildlife majorly due to the ongoing heavy rains being experienced across the country.
The displacement is anticipated to cause unexpected encounters which may lead to human-wildlife conflict.
"As a precaution, KWS cautions the public to avoid outdoor activities in those areas, especially after dusk. The safety of people and promoting wildlife coexistence is our priority," KWS added in its statement.
