Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday, November 15 arrested four suspects in connection with the murder of 24-year-old Keagan Githua.

The 24-year-old who was working at the Kenya Reinsurance Corporation Limited (Kenya Re) after he recently graduated from Strathmore University where he studied Information Technology (IT) was stabbed to death on Sunday, October 30, by robbers on a motorcycle in Ridgeways, Kiambu county.

In a statement, the detectives based at DCI-Starehe mounted a dawn operation that began at a city toilet along River Road

It is here where they pounced on the first suspect before heading to Githurai, where the rest were arrested and the deceased’s smartphone was recovered.

"This is after a detailed analysis of the gang’s modus operandi was conducted by sleuths based at the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, who have since established that the gang operates from the Githurai area.

"Keagan who had recently graduated from Strathmore University with a degree in Information Technology was killed in cold blood by robbers who stabbed him in the chest as they fled, after taking away his mobile phone," the DCI reported in part.

The investigative agency also mounted an ongoing operation to arrest more members of the gang in Githurai and other parts of the city, as detectives move with speed to deal with the gangs terrorizing city residents.

"We are appealing to members of the public to continue providing information on this and other gangs anonymously, on our #FichuakwaDCI toll-free line 0800 722 203," the DCI appealed to Kenyans.

Keagan's mother, Lucy Githua, said that her only son was stabbed in the chest as he resisted the robbers. He was pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital along the busy road by a good Samaritan.

“Keagan was stabbed by thugs on a boda boda along Ridgeways road as he walked home. They attempted to steal his phone but he resisted.

"He was immediately rushed to the hospital by a good Samaritan. Sadly he died of heart-knife injuries on arrival at the hospital,” Lucy said.

Githua's family revealed on Sunday, November 6 that the assailants, after they stole his phone, had continued to use it days after the crime, oblivious of the potential consequences especially after police called the number.

The family further noted that the thugs dared the police to come after them when a cop from the Muthaiga Police station, where they had reported the case dialled the victim's mobile number.

The murder sparked an uproar across the country and was one of the numerous incidents the public cited regarding boda boda gangs that forced the government, through Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, to take immediate action.
