Former East African Affairs, Commerce and Tourism Cabinet Secretary (CS) Phyllis Kandie, has committed to streamlining the agriculture sector following her appointment by President William Ruto as an Advisor at State House.

While celebrating her appointment on Tuesday, September 19, Kandie, who served in Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta's government, disclosed that she was appointed as the Advisor on Commodities Market Development.

She revealed that she will serve at the Presidential Council of Economic Advisors which is chaired by Economist David Ndii.

Kandie went on to state that she will, in her new capacity ensure that Ruto's vision to streamline the Agriculture sector is achieved and that she will also ensure they set up channels that can link Kenyan farmers with international markets.

"I would like to thank HE the President for the honour he has bestowed on me to serve as his advisor, Commodities Market Development.

"I undertake to work diligently with all stakeholders to ensure that his vision to streamline the Agriculture sector by setting up a licensed regulated private sector-led National Commodities Exchange that shall link the Farmer to both the domestic and international markets becomes a reality," she stated on X (formerly Twitter).

Kandie served in former President Uhuru Kenyatta's Cabinet between 2013 and 2017 before she was appointed Kenyan ambassador to Belgium in 2018.

In her new capacity, Kandie will provide expert advice and counsel to the President on all matters related to the development of the commodities market. This includes advising on policies and regulations that will promote the growth and efficiency of the market, as well as on ways to mitigate risks and ensure the stability of the market.

Kandie has a deep understanding of the commodities market, as well as experience in government and the private sector due to her experience as a Cabinet Secretary for the East Africa Community Affairs. 

In the Presidential Council of Economic Advisors, Kandie will be tasked with the responsibility of staying abreast of the most recent market trends and developments, as well as with the role of identifying and analyzing potential risks and opportunities.

She is expected to promote fair and open trade and to ensure that Kenyan businesses have access to the resources they need to compete in the global marketplace.

Her appointment sees her join other advisors in helping Ruto with economic, foreign affairs, and trade, compared to the previous regime which allocated most functions to Cabinet Secretaries, having a limited number of advisors.

On Thursday, September 14, Ruto appointed former Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter as his advisor on Great Lakes Region Affairs.
