Former Mathira Member of Parliament (MP) Eliud Matu Wamae is dead.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday, December 15 sent a message of condolence to the family, relatives and friends of the renowned politician and entrepreneur who died at a Nairobi hospital on Wednesday night, December 14.

In his message of comfort and encouragement to the family, the former President described Mzee Wamae as a hardworking and progressive Kenyan who made a significant contribution to the country’s socioeconomic development.

Apart from his outstanding leadership as a Member of Parliament for Mathira Constituency for three terms, former President Kenyatta said Mzee Wamae will also be remembered for the key role he played in the revival of the New Kenya Cooperative Creameries.

“To Mrs Joyce Gathoni Wamae, the children and grandchildren, our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time of grieving and loss,” Former President Kenyatta said.

He prayed to God to give the widow of Mzee Wamae the strength and courage to bear the loss.

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga also eulogised the family of the late Mzee Wamae.

"Rest in eternal peace Hon Matu Wamae. You have lived a rich life in the service of humanity. As Mathira MP, you made your mark. Your revival of the once moribund KCC is a story worth emulating. You go home empty, having poured out yourself for our society," Kahiga said in a Facebook post.

"For Mama Wamae and the family, rest in the knowledge that a hero has gone home to rest. Receive heartfelt condolences on my own behalf and on behalf of the Nyeri people. May the Angels of God receive your soul unto the bosom of Abraham."

The cause of death was not established by the time of going to the press. He served as Mathira MP for three uninterrupted terms between 1983 and 2002, the same constituency Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua served in.

Born in Kianyingi village in Mathira constituency in 1933, the 89-year-old served three consecutive terms from 1983 to 1988, when he was defeated by Ngibuini Kuguru, and again from 1992 to 2002, when Nderitu Gachagua was elected on a NARC-Kenya ticket.

He was also the chairman of the Kenya Cooperative Creameries (KCC) for 15 years before being succeeded by Ignatius Kahiu.

He wrote the book Born to Serve, in which he recounted the late Kenya's second president, Daniel Arap Moi's 24-year rule and its impact on the Kikuyu community.
