Chaos erupted during the launch of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's party in Lavington, Nairobi County, after a group of suspected goons attempted to interfere with the proceedings.

The disturbance occurred on Thursday morning, May 15, shortly after Gachagua and senior officials from the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) had departed the venue.

Police officers, who were on high alert, swiftly responded by firing warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd that had gathered near the exit to catch a glimpse of the former DP.

Here is the video:

Footage from the scene, seen by Viral Tea, captured an individual, believed to be a police officer, discharging a firearm into the air as people surged toward the gate.

An armed individual who is suspected to be one of Gachagua's bodyguards could be heard shouting, "Remove the vehicle" as the crowd forced itself through the congested exit.

Amid the commotion, the former Deputy President's convoy was briefly halted as police ramped up efforts to restore order. The situation calmed down after approximately five minutes.

On Thursday, May 15, Gachagua officially launched his much-anticipated DCP, joined by his political allies at the party’s headquarters in Nairobi.

In a move that surprised many, the former Deputy President was the first to address the gathering, unveiling the party and reaffirming its central mission of “listening to the people.”

“I made a promise to you that in May 2025, I would unveil a new political party whose philosophy resonates with you, as you all know I am an honest and truthful man, I keep my word and promises; I detest lies, and that is why I disagreed with the liar number one.

"We finally have a political party where every Kenyan is treated equally. Our new party is the Democracy for Citizens Party,” said Gachagua.

The DCP party is headquartered on Musa Gitau Road in Lavington, Nairobi. It bears the official colours of green, brown, and black, and its logo depicts a hand reaching toward an ear.

Announcing the party's leadership structure, Gachagua named former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala as the party’s deputy leader and appointed former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi as the National Organising Secretary.
