Chaotic scenes that emerged at the launch of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's party in Lavington, Nairobi County, have attracted the condemnation of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

In a statement, Kindiki called on Kenyans to exercise political tolerance, his remarks coming moments after a group of suspected goons attempted to interfere with the proceedings.

Kindiki warned that violence, inflammatory language, and divisive politics pose a serious risk to the nation’s democratic development.

He stressed the importance of embracing democratic tolerance, noting that it is essential for national progress and the protection of future generations.

"Our country must exercise democratic tolerance and embrace issue-based politics. Insults, violence and divisive rhetoric as a means of processing political differences of opinion have no place in our society," Kindiki hit out.

"We owe to the current and future generations a nation built on peace, peaceful coexistence and respect for one another even if when we disagree on issues of policy."

The disturbance occurred on Thursday morning, May 15, shortly after Gachagua and senior officials from the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) had departed the venue.

Police officers, who were on high alert, swiftly responded by firing warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd that had gathered near the exit to catch a glimpse of the former DP.

Amid the commotion, the former Deputy President's convoy was briefly halted as police ramped up efforts to restore order. The situation calmed down after approximately five minutes.

On Thursday, May 15, Gachagua officially launched his much-anticipated DCP, joined by his political allies at the party’s headquarters in Nairobi.

In a move that surprised many, the former Deputy President was the first to address the gathering, unveiling the party and reaffirming its central mission of “listening to the people.”

“I made a promise to you that in May 2025, I would unveil a new political party whose philosophy resonates with you, as you all know I am an honest and truthful man, I keep my word and promises; I detest lies, and that is why I disagreed with the liar number one.

"We finally have a political party where every Kenyan is treated equally. Our new party is the Democracy for Citizens Party,” said Gachagua.
