Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua disclosed that he formed a private security team made up of licensed firearm holders after the government pulled his official security detail.

Speaking on Monday, May 19, at his Karen residence during a press briefing, Gachagua justified the move, arguing that it was a necessary step to protect himself amid rising threats.

He emphasised that the decision to set up his security team consisting of civilian firearm holders was fully within legal bounds and driven solely by legitimate concerns for his safety.

Gachagua even disclosed that he is a licensed firearm holder and has been so for 30 years, hence he has the legal right to possess and protect himself with firearms.

"I'm a licensed firearm holder; I have been a licensed firearm holder since 1995. The officers who helped me are also licensed firearm holders, and they are doing so within the provisions of the law. We don't carry illegal weapons," he revealed in response to a journalist.

"In this country, civilians are allowed to have firearms, and since the government withdrew security around me, and there have been attacks against me, it was my responsibility to put up a team of civilian firearm holders to escort me around."

At the same time, Gachagua emerged with explosive claims of a murder plot against him, with state-sponsored officers given specific instructions to take him out. He revealed that he was made aware of alleged instructions from the President to 'deal with him' once and for all.

The former deputy claimed that efforts to silence him using state-backed thugs failed on Sunday, leading to police stepping in to stop what he described as a plot against his life. "Since the goons sponsored by the state on several occasions had failed, police and other state security agencies had to come in," he added.

Gachagua also claimed that the government wanted to poison him using biological means on Sunday, when the contingent of officers chasing him had barricaded his home.

"After about 30 minutes, the killer squad was joined by their counterparts, who were highly trained in the use of biological weapons.

"Their instructions were to poison me through inhaled chemicals that would paralyse my brain within three months. This was the intent and the purpose of the whole operation," Gachagua added.

The press briefing came after a tense incident on Sunday evening, when police officers from various units allegedly surrounded the homes of Gachagua. The late-night operation was confirmed by his lawyer and ally, Ndegwa Njiru, who sounded the alarm publicly, expressing concern over the police presence at Gachagua’s Karen and Wamunyoro residences.

Gachagua denied receiving any formal summons from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), as required by law, but admitted he was aware of a plan to block his movements. He revealed that he had to take an alternate route to reach his Karen home.

According to Gachagua, the detour was a strategic move to prevent his security team from being disarmed—something he feared would have left him exposed to potential threats.

Tensions around Gachagua peaked on Friday after he made explosive remarks suggesting the 2027 elections could spiral into chaos if the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) failed to ensure fairness.

Despite the backlash, Gachagua stood by his words on Sunday, maintaining that his comments were not meant to incite, but to demand accountability from the commission ahead of the next polls.

"This (statement) was a precautionary statement and not incitement. It is based on historical facts and past electoral experiences of 1992, 1997 and 2007 controversial elections that we must have a free and fair election in 2027," he asserted.
