Kenya hosts at least 16 individuals with personal wealth exceeding Ksh12 billion (roughly USD100 million), placing them within Africa’s elite “centi-millionaire” bracket, according to the 2025 Africa Wealth Report by Henley & Partners in collaboration with New World Wealth.

The report, which monitors private wealth dynamics across the continent, notes that although Kenya has yet to produce a U.S.-dollar billionaire, its pool of ultra-wealthy individuals is steadily growing, signalling deeper capital formation across key sectors.

Data from the Henley Global Report (2025) shows Kenya is home to around 6,800 millionaires—defined as individuals worth over USD1 million (approximately Ksh129 million)—alongside the 16 centi-millionaires, reinforcing its status as one of Africa’s leading wealth centres.

Within the region, Kenya ranks top in East Africa and fifth continentally in terms of millionaire numbers, placing it ahead of Ghana and Namibia but behind larger economies such as South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, and Nigeria.

Where Wealth Is in Kenya

The findings indicate that wealth generation in Kenya is largely anchored in sectors such as banking, manufacturing, agriculture, real estate, and retail. Much of this wealth stems from diversified family-run enterprises and long-established business empires.

Nairobi remains the country’s primary wealth hub, accounting for roughly 47 per cent of total private wealth and over 60 per cent of all millionaires. High-end neighbourhoods, including Karen and Muthaiga, continue to attract high-net-worth individuals.

The report further points out that Kenya’s millionaire population expanded by about 14 per cent between 2015 and 2025, underscoring resilience despite global economic disruptions and domestic financial pressures over the past decade.

Across Africa, the total millionaire count stands at approximately 122,500, alongside 348 centi-millionaires and 25 dollar billionaires, reflecting a slight overall contraction of about 5 per cent in wealth growth during the review period.

Peers & Where to Invest

In East Africa, Tanzania emerges as the only country with a U.S.-dollar billionaire, even as Kenya continues to dominate in both the number of wealthy individuals and overall wealth concentration.

Looking ahead, the report forecasts sustained wealth growth in Kenya, particularly in sectors such as fintech, real estate, eco-tourism, and technology. Coastal cities like Mombasa are expected to draw more high-net-worth individuals over the next decade.

However, the authors caution that the figures are modelled estimates derived from various indicators—including stock market performance, property valuations, and migration patterns—and should be interpreted as broad indicators of wealth trends rather than exact figures.
