Suna East Member of Parliament (MP) Junet Mohamed has been removed from his position as Secretary General of the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance coalition, compounding woes that have dogged him in recent weeks.

The decision was announced on Tuesday, February 3, after a meeting of the coalition’s National Executive Council (NEC). Junet has been replaced by Suba South MP and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) legislator Caroli Omondi.

The NEC, chaired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, also named Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the new party leader.

“Following the resolutions of 2nd February, 2026, of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party's Council and National Executive Committee, the party notifies the public of the change of the following officials: the new Party Leader is H.E. Dr Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, E.G.H, SC, the new Secretary General Hon. Caroli Omondi,” the statement read in part.

Kalonzo, part of the United Opposition, takes over from former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who died in October 2025.

In other appointments, Philip Kisia has been appointed as the new Executive Director, with the changes formally communicated to the Registrar of Political Parties.

Kisia replaces former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju, who stepped down before the NEC meeting. In a letter addressed to Kenyatta, Tuju indicated that he had handed over responsibilities to Kisia.

The leadership reshuffle comes amid ongoing political realignments following Odinga’s death. Junet has recently been publicly linked to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

The Suna East MP has also been caught up in internal ODM disputes and is aligned with a faction pushing for continued cooperation with UDA under the broad-based government framework.

The changes notably come after a section of parties aligned with the Azimio coalition demanded Junet's immediate resignation, with the parties on Tuesday, January 13, accusing him of behavior they argued damages the coalition’s credibility and betrays the ideals of its founding figures.

The parties, fronted by National Liberal Party leader Dr Augustus Kyalo Muli, argued that Junet’s continued tenure is no longer defensible, further faulting him for what they describe as reckless and defamatory remarks directed at Kenyatta.

In a statement, more than 10 Azimio-affiliated parties accused Junet of making comments that “slander the name and legacy” of the former head of state.

“His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta served the nation with dignity, protected Kenya’s territorial integrity, upheld national cohesion, and shepherded a peaceful transition of power. Any attempt to diminish that record is dishonest and an affront to millions of Kenyans,” the parties stated.

Junet's replacement, Omondi, has been a vocal advocate for ODM’s independence. ODM remains one of the constituent parties within the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Alliance.
