A number of Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) soldiers were injured on Sunday, September 10 after a vehicle they were travelling in ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Lamu County.

According to a statement by KDF on Monday, September 11, the soldiers were on patrol along the Milimani Baure road when the incident occurred.

"On 10th Sept 2023, KDF soldiers on patrol along the Milimani Baure road in Lamu County ran over an IED.

"The injured were airlifted to Manda Base Hospital for medical care," stated KDF in part.

The statement however did not immediately reveal the number of soldiers who were injured during the incident nor did it reveal the soldiers who might have been killed in the attack.

Reacting to the incident, KDF condemned the criminals who disrupt movement, and sabotage socio-economic stability in the area.

"Further, KDF calls upon the residents to share information with the security agencies on these criminal elements who lurk in their communities," added KDF.

Lamu County has been a key operational area of the Al-Shabaab militia who have been terrorising residents and staging attacks against the police, which have left several people dead including police officers.

The attacks have also left schools closed and non-local teachers opting to vacate the place for safety reasons.

The Kenyan forces have however intensified more patrols even as the government vows to crush the notorious Al-Shabaab terrorist group, whose militia is believed to have secured Boni forest as their hideout and operational area.

On Sunday, June 18, at least two KDF soldiers were killed as they responded to a morning attack targeting a General Service Unit (GSU) team in Lamu.

At least 10 GSU officers were earlier injured when an armoured personnel carrier (APC) vehicle they were in ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki revealed that 60 suspected Al Shabaab militants were killed in an operation on Tuesday, August 1 in Lamu County, the terrorists being part of a group that was seeking to attack four different passenger buses, putting the lives of 200 people at risk.
