The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has announced the temporary suspension of the Nanyuki Safari train.

In a statement on Thursday, April 18, the railway firm revealed that the ongoing heavy rains have affected a section of the railway line in the Thika - Mitubiri area.

"As a result, the Nanyuki Safari train will not run on Friday, April 19, 2024. Our technical teams are on the ground to address the situation and restore the railway line for normal operations to resume," Kenya Railways announced.

KRC assured that the safety of its passengers is of paramount importance to them and that it was doing everything to ensure the network is safe for operations.

"We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused and look forward to having you back on board upon normal resumption of service," added the firm.

However, Kenya Railways did not reveal if it would be only the Friday trip that would be suspended or other subsequent trips that would be affected by the same.

It is not the first time the Nairobi-Nanyuki route has been suspended. This was the case on June 15, 2023, when midweek passenger services between the two towns were suspended indefinitely.

"We wish to notify the public that we have temporarily suspended the midweek train service to Nanyuki effective Wednesday, June 21, 2023, until further notice," the statement read in part then.

This decision was made to address certain operational requirements and improve the overall efficiency of the service.

However, Kenya Railways, which is responsible for managing the country's rail network, assured passengers that there would be weekend trains running on Friday and Sunday.

The decision to suspend the midweek passenger service was part of Kenya Railways' ongoing efforts to enhance its operations and provide an improved service experience for passengers.

Kenya Railways had thus asked passengers who rely on the midweek service to make alternative travel arrangements before the temporary suspension took effect.

On November 24, 2023, the railway company announced the return of the Nanyuki midweek train service as well as the Kisumu service in anticipation of increased demand ahead of the festive season.
