Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale on Sunday, January 28 slaughtered a bull which the lawmaker uses in bullfighting competitions after it attacked and killed his 47-year-old employee.

Speaking during an interview with Vuuka FM, Khalwale revealed that the employee who had been herding the bull for five years before the unfortunate incident was gored to death at the senator's home in Malinya, Ikolomani, Kakamega County.

The senator further explained that his employee, Kizito Moi Amukune, who has been working in his homestead for 24 years came home seemingly drunk.

“He came back after taking busaa which smells like molasses. The bull rushed towards him, attracted by the smell,” the senator stated.

Khalwale added that Kizito could have possibly hit the bull in shock as it rushed towards him prompting the animal, used to fighting, to respond in self-defence.

On approaching the man, he was shocked, triggering a chain reaction which saw the bull use its horn to pierce the man in the neck.

“He might have hit the animal in shock, making the bull react in defence as it usually does," added Khalwale.

“There is a horn that got him in the neck. That is what probably killed him."

Kizito's body was discovered by investigators within the confines of the senator's bull stable, exhibiting what appeared to be multiple injuries inflicted by bull horns.

In keeping with the tradition, Senator Khalwale shared a video in which he said he speared the bull, named Inasio, to death. Videos showed the Senator armed with a spear, surrounded by his kinsmen following the incident.

"My champion bull, Inasio, has attacked and instantly killed Kizito Moi Amukune. Moi has been the caretaker of my fighter bulls for over 20 years," Khalwale wrote on X

"In keeping with our culture, I have today speared bull Inasio to death."

The deceased's body has since been moved to the mortuary at Kakamega County General Hospital, pending an autopsy.

It’s important to note that bulls are not naturally aggressive towards humans but they only become aggressive when they feel threatened or provoked.

Therefore, it’s important to take precautions when handling bulls. Some tips include avoiding sudden movements, staying calm, and giving the bull plenty of space.

In Western Kenya, bullfighting is a famous cultural tradition with residents of Shinyalu and Ikolomani constituencies in Kakamega County, especially, considered the main practitioners. Thousands of spectators assemble at Malinya Stadium in the Ikolomani constituency to watch the battle which takes place on various Saturdays and federal holidays.

The Luhya tribe's communities have relied on bullfighting as a mainstay of their efforts to maintain peace. In contrast to the corrida de toros in Spain, when a man battles a bull, bullfighting in Kakamega pits bulls against one another. Each bull represents a particular village within the county as well as the village it comes from.

In Kakamega bullfighting is a close-up and personal experience, with the crowd watching intently and running occasionally to avoid getting hit.

Senator Khalwale, often referred to as the Bull-Fighter is fond of the culture of bullfighting which he promotes by offering money in the competitions and even keeps his bulls that take part in these cultural competitions.
