Days after former Citizen TV presenter, Kimani Mbugua opened up on social media on his challenging battle with bipolar mood disorder among other issues, Kenyan netizens have responded to his cries for help in a resounding fashion.

Led by Nyako, a popular TikTok personality, Kenyans utilised the immense power of TikTok live sessions to raise a total of Ksh420,000 to help him get his life back on track.

Nyako, nicknamed The Chosen One, came to Mbugua's rescue after he came out publicly to reveal that he was homeless, broke and in debt.

One of the handlers of his case revealed to TUKO.co.ke that they managed to collect the amount in one and a half hours.

In an earlier statement, Mbugua revealed that he now has a laptop that he can use to get back to his work and plans to rent a bedsitter which he will also use as his home office.

“What an uplifting week this has turned out to be! Just received a laptop, and now I can resume my work. No more being unreachable! I managed to withdraw 2,000 from the 14,000 mentioned in my previous post…

"All of you have rescued a life that was on the brink of despair. Company registration is complete! Goal 1 achieved!!" he appreciated.

The former anchor's initial debt of Ksh1.7 million was reduced to Ksh1.2 million after his creditors waived penalties for him.

The 27-year-old was known for his youthful approach to the news before his media career came to an end in 2020.

Mbugua's journey through mental illness began that year when he was diagnosed with bipolar mood disorder, a condition that significantly impacted his life and career.

"I have lost so many things, I have lost so many friends on the journey. People got tired of me and I'm in a position where most people are not willing to help," he narrated in part.

He added that after leaving the hospital last week, he sensed that his mind returned to normal, but declared that he was not going to return to his previous position in life.

"So… I’m homeless. I have my bag and I am out, the people who I was living with said they couldn’t host me for any longer and asked me to look for an alternative," he went on.

Mbugua announced that he was looking for a business partner to finance his ideas, which included working with creatives in the content creation industry in Kenya, adding that he needed to register a company and then raise Ksh200,000 for the idea to pick up.

Counsellors, medics, and psychologists advise that you can always reach out for help when experiencing any mental health issues. Call the Kenya Red Cross toll-free hotline, 1199, for support.
