Motorists have been advised to prepare for temporary disruptions along the Nairobi Expressway following an announcement of a partial closure to facilitate maintenance works.

In a notice issued on Thursday, May 15, Nairobi drivers were informed that the stretch between the James Gichuru Roundabout overpass and Njuguna’s Place on Waiyaki Way will be closed from Friday, May 16, to Monday, May 19.

Moja Expressway Company, which is in charge of the operations of the 27.1-kilometre elevated road, however, cautioned that traffic on the underpass will be unaffected, a move which provides motorists an alternative to using the Expressway.

"Motorists are informed that the Nairobi Expressway section from the overpass at James Gichuru Roundabout to Njuguna's Place on Waiyaki Way will be temporarily closed from 6:00 a.m. on Friday, May 16th, to 8:00 pm on Monday, May 19th, to facilitate road construction and maintenance works," Moja Expressway announced.

"Please note that traffic on the underpass and the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway will not be affected. Apologies for the inconvenience caused, and thank you for choosing the Nairobi Expressway."

The closure of the expressway at the overpass is expected to impact motorists travelling from the Central Business District (CBD) toward areas such as Kinoo, Uthiru, and Kikuyu.

As the overpass typically allows drivers to bypass the James Gichuru Roundabout and continue along Waiyaki Way, the partial shutdown is likely to cause delays over the weekend, with vehicles forced to use the same exit as those connecting to James Gichuru Road from Waiyaki Way.

This will mean that motorists heading into the Nairobi CBD via Waiyaki Way will have to share the route with those aiming to access the Red Hill Link Road, potentially increasing congestion.

Motorists in the coming weekend have thus been advised to plan their trips accordingly as a result of the temporary closure.

The Nairobi Expressway, a vital route for easing traffic flow in and out of the city, undergoes regular maintenance to ensure safety and efficiency.

This closure follows closely on the heels of a recently announced six-hour shutdown of a section of Museum Hill Road, which is connected to the Nairobi Expressway.

Museum Hill Exit A is a critical access point, linking the elevated expressway to key areas in central Nairobi, including the University of Nairobi, Kijabe Street, and Waiyaki Way.
