The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) on Sunday, April 20, confirmed two tragic human-wildlife encounters that resulted in the deaths of a 14-year-old girl in Nairobi and a 54-year-old man in Nyeri County.

KWS expressed sorrow over the incidents, calling them unfortunate reminders of the ongoing struggle to balance wildlife protection with human safety.

The first incident took place on a ranch bordering the southern side of Nairobi National Park, where a lioness attacked and killed a 14-year-old girl.

According to KWS, the mauling happened in the Savannah area near the park, though they noted that full details are still being verified.

The lion, believed to have come from Nairobi National Park, reportedly entered a residential compound within Savannah Ranch, where it encountered the girl.

A witness who saw the attack around 7 p.m. on Saturday quickly raised the alarm, prompting KWS rangers and emergency crews to respond.

Following a trail of blood, the team was led to the Mbagathi River, where they discovered the girl's body with injuries to her lower back. The lion was nowhere to be seen.

The 14-year-old was a Grade 7 student at a nearby primary school. Her body was taken to the Nairobi Funeral Home for a postmortem.

Search efforts are still underway to locate the stray lion, amid a growing number of lion escapes from Nairobi National Park into neighbouring residential areas.

In a separate incident, a 54-year-old man was killed by an elephant in Nyeri County. According to KWS, the man died after being trampled in Mere Forest, located in Kieni East.

On Monday, January 20, KWS responded to the lions that were reported to be on the loose in the Rongai area of Kajiado County, stating that rangers had caught up to the third and final lioness, which had eluded capture for weeks.

Concerns about lions roaming freely in Rongai began after they were captured on CCTV footage. One of the lions is reported to have attacked dogs in one of the neighbourhoods.
