A police officer is in custody on robbery with violence charges after he attacked a university student and robbed him of his mobile phone and other valuables.

According to a report from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday, December 5, the officer identified as Kevin Sila and an accomplice had accosted two Machakos University students as they headed to their rented quarters on a bicycle on Sunday night, December 4.

"The duo who were on a motorbike registration number KMTE 363W had flagged down the students in the wee hours of the morning before descending on one of them with resounding slaps as they ransacked his pockets.

"His roommate however managed to escape the attack narrowly and took flight screaming, attracting neighbours who also happened to be students from the university," wrote the DCI in part.

The students responded to the distress calls and rescued their fellow comrade from the wrath of the officer and his accomplice.

The drama unfolded when the officer attempted to escape after handing back the stolen phone but it was too late as his colleagues from Machakos police station arrived and arrested him and his colleague.

"The officer-turned-suspect and his accomplice identified as David Muringu are cooling their heels at Machakos police station, pending arraignment on robbery with violence charges," added the DCI.

Elsewhere police in Nakuru County launched investigations into the death of an officer from the General Service Unit (GSU) Recce Squad that occurred over the weekend.

The security officer identified as Harrison Onywoki Onuonga was attacked by thugs wielding crude weapons on Saturday, December 3. He was in the company of his brothers Hezron Onwonga and Morara Onwonga when the group of five armed thugs attacked them.

The three were attacked by rungus and machete leaving the officer dead. Reports indicated that they were from a family meeting in Nakuru City Center when they were attacked.

The thugs stole their mobile phones and disappeared after having left them with multiple stab wounds. They were rushed to the hospital but Onywoki, unfortunately, succumbed to the injuries.

"When these thugs kill the officers, it is the families of these officers that suffer the most because these officers are daughters, sons, and breadwinners in their families," Nakuru County Police Commander Peter Mwanzo said.

After about three months of declining criminal activities in Nakuru, the crime rates have skyrocketed in the last two months.

A senior police officer in the county drew controversy after was captured in a video gone viral online advising Kenyans to take the law into their own hands in the event a crime occurs in their area.
