John Maina, famously known as MC Fullstop, who is a K24 TV and NRG Radio host, on Friday, May 12 made public the identity of an imposter who has been running a parody Twitter account of Citizen TV under the Royal Media Services (RMS).

In a series of tweets, the renowned reggae emcee called out the imposter under the moniker Psychohsins and accused him of publishing misleading and malicious information regarding his death on the social media platform.

Psychohsins had tweeted under the parody account that MC Fullstop had passed away after he was diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) which caused his left lung to collapse.

MC Fullstop dismissed the claims that he died while urging Kenyans On Twitter (KOT) to report Psychosins' account which eventually pulled down the tweet.

"Unajua kenye umefanyia family yangu wewe! RT widely tukomeshe huyu jamaa (Do you realise what you have done to my family? Retweet widely we stop this guy)," he appealed in one post.

He further shared a screenshot of the false tweet as well as photos of the imposter, whom he managed to track down through his TikTok handle, further appealing to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the National Police Service (NPS) and the Inspector General of Police (IG) Japhet Koome to take action against him.

"This is the guy behind the Citizen parody account. Huyu ndio jamaa ame (this is the guy who) spread fake news about my death! Affecting me, my family and friends," he added.

MC Fullstop's tweet went viral, viewed over 93,600 times, with over 1,000 retweets and over 1,600 likes.

"He (Psychohsins) has just blocked me! But we can still get him, it's not the first time he has done this but right now, it has affected my whole family, they are in shock, and panic, the old ones are the most affected," he revealed in another tweet viewed over 209,000 times.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2018 signed the new Computer and Cybercrimes Bill into law in 2018, which sought to crack down on Kenyans sharing false information on social media.

Under the law, a person who intentionally publishes false, misleading or fictitious data or misinforms with the intent that the data shall be considered or acted upon as authentic, with or without any financial gain, commits an offence and shall, on conviction, be liable to a fine not exceeding Ksh5million or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or to both.

It also states that if one unlawfully obtains data or performs a prohibited act in order to gain access to critical data with the intention to directly or indirectly benefit a foreign state against the Republic of Kenya, commits an offence and is liable, on conviction, to imprisonment for a period not exceeding twenty years or to a fine not exceeding Ksh10 million, or to both.

A series of changes by the Twitter owner, Elon Musk, led to legacy verified checkmarks, or 'blue ticks', being scrapped from the platform in a mass purge that also affected accounts belonging to nearly all Kenyan media houses, including Citizen TV, which had over 5.2 million followers when its legacy checkmark was taken away.

This then led to a number of parody accounts using the Citizen Digital logo as its profile picture emerging at the same time and confused loyal users from its main account by spreading all manner of fake news under the TV station's credentials.

Just before Citizen TV had declared that it would pay for the Twitter Blue subscription service, Twitter restored its verification status as well as that for accounts with over 1 million followers without their knowledge.
