President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) nominated three people to serve in various county assemblies, who had worked as volunteers at the party's headquarters.

Among them is Everlyn Korir, who was nominated for a seat in Baringo County having volunteered to work in the front office in 2021. After she finished her education, Korir went hunting for jobs before she landed a role as a volunteer at UDA's offices in Makindu Road, Nairobi.

"It was a surprise when I saw my name. I thank the party officials for trusting me with the position and I promise to deliver for the residents of Baringo," she said.

Lydia Jeptoo, a cook, was nominated for a member of a county assembly's seat in Nandi. She served in the hospitality department mandated to prepare meals for all county officials.

Jeptoo revealed that she was unsure that she would make the cut having submitted her application.

"We were told to make the application but I did not know I would make it. It was a surprise when I was told that my name was on the list. I'm grateful and I look forward to venturing into elective politics in the future," Jeptoo remarked.

Also included is Evans Kipyegon who made it to the nomination list after he joined the party as a cleaner in 2020 before being promoted to a messenger.

"I used to deliver letters to the Registrar of Political Parties, purchasing commodities, and doubling up as a storekeeper," the nominated MCA for Baringo stated.

Two other subordinate staff, Beatrice Chepkemoi and Noelas Omollo were handed MCA seats in Kericho to represent gender and special interest groups.

On Friday, September UDA 16, Tony Marubu, a boda boda rider was nominated to be an MCA  in the Murang'a County Assembly. Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro, while making the announcement, praised Marubu as a sharp and articulate youth.

Marubu had resorted to the boda boda business, which he has been doing for the last two years to earn a living, after he was unable to further his studies due to a lack of funds, despite scoring a mean grade of C+ in his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE).

"We noticed him around two years ago in our usual work activities. He came out as sharp and articulate. Called him to the office and enquired about him. He told me he had scored C+ but was unable to proceed to college.

"We were willing to sponsor him for a teaching course but in the course of making it happen, he is now an MCA," Nyoro further narrated.

Marubu, who is popularly known as Manucho, welcomed the nomination and expressed his gratitude to the Kiharu MP.

"Of all the things we have done as UDA fraternity, the nomination of Tony Marubu as an MCA in Murang'a is among the greatest," he added.

President Ruto has been prioritising the lives of the common mwananchi through a bottom-up economic agenda which the Kenya Kwanza coalition has been banking on to transform the country's economy starting with people at the bottom of the economic pyramid (mama mbogas and boda boda riders, among others)
