One person lost her life in the wee hours of Saturday, February 22 following a tragic accident involving a van and a sports car along Mombasa Road/Uhuru Highway in Nairobi.

As reported by journalist Saddique Shaban, the accident occurred at Nairobi's Nyayo Stadium roundabout, caused by a motorist suspected to have been driving under the influence.

The responsible vehicle, a Volkswagen Golf, was speeding along Mombasa Road before ramming the van on its side.

"A suspected drink-and-drive motorist has just caused a fatal two-car accident at Nairobi's Nyayo stadium roundabout. The VW Golf, speeding inbound from Mombasa road, the reckless driver T-boned a van negotiating a roundabout and overturned it inside the crossway," Shaban stated in part.

A female passenger from the staff van sadly lost her life while others were reported to be fighting for their lives in the hospital.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Volkswagen Golf escaped from the wreckage and disappeared. Some of his passengers were injured.

Following Shaban's report, netizens traced the vehicle to its owner. The Golf was reported to be in a race with three other vehicles. X user @SakwaMasai reported witnessing three of the Golf GTI versions racing along Mombasa Road, one of which sped past him 10 seconds prior to the accident

"Social media users seem to have identified the owner of the Killer VW golf that ploughed into a staff van at Nairobi's Nyayo Stadium roundabout. Police claim the driver fled the scene before later sending emissaries to the Industrial area Station to inquire about the fatal accident," Shaban added.

Police had alleged that the GTI was in an illegal street race with other vehicles, including a "ubiquitos yellow Ford Mustang", allegedly racing towards Kikuyu Town using different routes. The Ford Mustang later drove by the accident scene and sped off.

It is anticipated that a manhunt is underway for the driver of the Golf GTI and other vehicles including the Mustang which was at the scene of the accident before speeding off.
