Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi on Thursday, March 9 was forced to clear the air on his wife, Tessie Musalia's office using government funds for charity.

Speaking during the people's dialogue festival, organised by the Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD), Mudavadi watered down claims that the recently-launched Office of the Spouse to the Prime Cabinet Secretary was consuming funds from public coffers.

He assured that the office would remain in operation as it is pivotal to providing support to the needy.

“There has been no public expenditure that gone towards the office of Tessie Musalia and I don't see any public expenditure occurring.

“We will not stop supporting other people who are in need through charitable efforts but I am very clear that it will not be at the expense of the public funds,” he stated.

The former Vice President further noted that Tessie's office did not run under the government, further applauding Tessie's charity work during the times he was not in government

“I appreciate that activities of this nature are not government activities. They are social, philanthropic interventions that we made.

“Mrs Musalia Mudavadi has been in this process whether I was in the government or not,” the Prime CS explained.

The new office will see Tessie undertake four key roles including focusing on improving the lives of children and families.

She has been tasked with enhancing health with an emphasis on maternal and child healthcare, a role that was synonymous with former First Lady Mama Margaret Kenyatta, which saw her launch the Beyond Zero initiative that impacted the lives of thousands.

"The office is committed to promoting the well-being of Kenyan citizens by enhancing health with an emphasis on maternal and child healthcare.

"Also, promote the protection of the environment and improvement of sanitation," Musavadi explained during the launch of the office on Friday evening.

On Saturday, February 25, Mudavadi noted that spouses of political leaders serve as much of an important role as their husbands in government, as is the case with, among them, the First Lady.

The Office of the Spouse to the Prime Cabinet Secretary was established by the Government to complement the work being done by the Office of the First Lady and the Office of the Spouse to the Deputy President.

Her role will see her join Mama Rachel Ruto and Pastor Dorcas Rigathi in driving the development agenda of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
