Nyamira County Assembly Majority Leader Elijah Osiemo is dead.

Osiemo, who was also MCA for Nyamaiya Ward died on Monday afternoon, August 7 following a tragic road accident along the Maai Mahiu-Naivasha road.

He was travelling to Nairobi alongside two of his colleagues prior to the crash.

Confirming the incident, Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo said the two other MCAs, Duke Masira and Priscilla Nyatichi, sustained injuries and were rushed to Naivasha Level Four Hospital.

Nyaribo expressed his condolences to the family of Osiemo, whom he mourned as a focused leader who had immense leadership and political life ahead of him.

"In Hon. Elijah Osiemo, the County has lost a young, industrious, talented, and focused leader who had an immense leadership and political life ahead of him," said the Governor.

"My Government has directed that the body of Hon. Member of County Assembly be moved to Nairobi for preservation as the County comes to terms with this tragic death.  I take this opportunity to wish the injured MCas a quick recovery and offer toy heartfelt condolences to the late Osiemo's family, residents of Nyamaiya Ward, and Nyamira County."

According to The Standard, the accident occurred after the driver of the car that was ferrying the MCAs hit a motorcycle rider before losing control and landing in a ditch.

Naivasha OCPD Benjamin Boen revealed that the driver of the car was overtaking a motorcycle operator who was ferrying a bag of charcoal when he hit him leading to the fatal accident.

"The car carrying the MCAs lost control after hitting the motorcycle operator and landed into a very deep ditch in the process killing one MCA," he said.

On June 17, 2023, Chewani ward residents were thrown into mourning following the death of MCA Hamisi Iddi Deye in a tragic road accident.

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party penned a message of condolence to Hamisi's family following the death of their kin in the accident that occurred along Malindi-Garsen Road.

"The Party and the People of Chewani ward have lost a focused and dedicated leader who put the interests of his people first. During this moment of grief, we pray for the soul of the departed, his family, and the people of Chewani ward. May his soul rest in eternal peace," the party stated.

NTSA Accident Statistics

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed on Thursday, March 23 that the number of fatalities from road accidents across the country dropped by 4.6 per cent.

In a statement, the authority reported the reduction in accidents in one year, adding that overall numbers show a drop in fatalities from 1,021 to 974.

On a category basis, pedestrian fatalities reduced from 359 in 2022 to 330 in 2023, a drop of 8.1 per cent while pillion passenger fatalities decreased from 109 in 2022 to 93 in 2023, a drop of 14.7 per cent. At the same time, motorcyclist fatalities decreased from 289 in 2022 to 265 in 2023, translating to an 8 per cent decline.

However, driver fatalities increased from 95 in 2022, to 98 in 2023, translating to a 3.2 per cent increase, while passenger fatalities increased from 154 in 2022 to 171 in 2023 (11 per cent) and pedal cyclists increased from 15 in 2022 to 17 in 2023, a 13 per cent increase.
