Dickson Loyerer, a National Youth Service (NYS) private who was filmed cleaning Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba's shoes, has been promoted.

In a statement on Thursday, November 10, the NYS stated that the officer has been promoted to a full corporal.

It added that the decision to promote him was out of his acts of kindness after the officer went viral this week over his noble gesture.

"When Princess Diana said “Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you", seemed to have had Dickson Loyerer in mind.

"Through his act of kindness to Ababu Namwamba, he has been promoted to CPL," NYS stated.

Loyerer assumed his new role with his new badge conferred to him at the NYS headquarters along Thika Road.

A corporal is a rank of non-commissioned officer in the army, above lance corporal or private first class and below sergeant. In some militaries, the rank of corporal nominally corresponds to commanding a section or squad of soldiers.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs, Sports and the Arts also joined in congratulating Loyerer for his promotion.

His promotion comes barely a day after he was offered a job at Namwamba's office.

Namwamba on Tuesday, November 8 invited Loyerer to his office for a cup of tea and promised that his actions will not go unrewarded.

"Dickson Loyerer yesterday graciously volunteered to clean my muddy shoes after a tree planting session at  NYS HQ where he works.

"Today we shared a cup of tea in my office, where he gave me NYS tips on grooming, discipline and skills. I have requested Loyerer to join my staff," he stated, though not disclosing the position he would serve in.

On his part, Loyerer explained that "I looked at your shoes and I saw some dirt. I then decided that I must clean your shoes because when our boss has dirt somewhere, we have to correct it.

"The cleaning of shoes is some of the skills we are taught. Additionally, when our bosses have a wardrobe malfunction, we have to correct it."
