Former Kakamega Governor and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) deputy party leader, Wycliffe Oparanya on Monday, April 29 addressed the photos that did several rounds on social media capturing him and a beautiful woman who is young at face value. However, it was not the response Kenyans expected.

The series of photos that brought Oparanya to the centre of public attention showed him alongside the woman identified as Mary Biketi, prompting a variety of reactions within the country's vibrant online community.

They captured him in a casual setting with Biketi, sparking conversation about Oparanya's personal life. It is worth noting that he has two wives, who are known publicly, with rumours that he has more.

Speaking in a recorded video, the former county boss wondered why an unscrupulous person took advantage to spread gossip that the two might be an item.

Confirming the authenticity of the photos, Oparanya revealed "I have seen someone circulating my photos. Those are genuine photos. I don't know why someone would waste time trying to circulate them."

He also wondered why Kenyans were making a big fuss about the photos to the point of using Kenyan media channels, popular bloggers and influencers to boost their traction

"It is very unfortunate that wherever I took those photos they leaked them to the press. Those are very decent photos and I don't know the interest that people have when you have taken photos with a loved one,” he continued.

The tone of his voice conveyed a mixture of surprise and disappointment over the breach of what he had expected to remain within the realm of his private life.

Oparanya, who is currently in Mombasa, however, dismissed rumours that he had been hospitalised, lamenting how much damage the fake reports were doing to his family.

“There is now fake news I am in hospital I am sick and here I am. I have a big family to protect.

"Those sending out fake news should stop. I have been in Mombasa for a few days meeting my people from my community,” he defended.

His statement brings to light the delicate balance that public figures have to contend with in terms of protecting elements of their personal lives, even though by default, their positions particularly those of national interest attract the greatest scrutiny.

Be it a celebrity, politician, government official even the President, individuals wielding such positions have to safeguard details of their personal lives from nosy elements, some of which could shatter their reputation beyond repair.

For now, the former governor seems to have taken the developments in stride, projecting a calm and composed demeanour as he addressed the viral photos.

Oparanya has been a consistent supporter of opposition chief Raila Odinga, supporting him even after the August 2022 election loss which saw some leaders jump ship to the opposition.

The former governor who served between 2013 and 2022 for two terms, faced two arrests in 2023.
