More than 20 Kenyan fishermen were killed at the Todonyang border point along Lake Turkana after an attack at the Kenya-Ethiopia border by suspected gunmen who ambushed them and opened fire indiscriminately.

Reports indicated that the attack was carried out by heavily armed Dassanech militia who stormed the area as the fishermen were going about their activities in Lake Turkana.

The attack left several others in critical condition, raising concerns that the death toll could increase.

According to local police reports, the incident may have been a retaliatory strike in response to an earlier event where a notorious bandit fatally shot three Dassanech fishermen in Turkana on Saturday morning.

Following the incident, Turkana North Member of Parliament Ekwon Nabuin urged the Ministry of Interior to take action, describing it as a 'massacre.'

He emphasized the severity of the situation, calling it 'extremely bad' and urging rescuers to act swiftly to protect the people of Todonyang.

"Ministry of Interior and National Administration, we are receiving disturbing reports of the killing of more than 20 fishermen in the Todonyang area of Lake Turkana by the Dassanech of Ethiopia. The numbers could be higher. The situation is extremely bad, rescuers must move fast to secure our people.

"The massacre is happening on Kenyan soil which is occupied by well-armed Ethiopian militias (Dassanech)," said Ekwon.

The attack took place on Saturday evening at Lopeimukat and Natira, near the Kenya-Ethiopia border along River Omo.

During the incident, five boats were ambushed, leading to the deaths of all those on board. The attackers also captured three firearms from the fishermen.

Survivors who hid among the reeds during the attack were later rescued and taken to Lowarengak Health Centre for medical treatment.

Police arrived at the scene to evaluate the situation, searching the reeds for any remaining bodies or survivors.
