Chaos erupted in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) on Monday afternoon after police fired teargas at a rally led by Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka near the Tea Room area in the city centre.

The disruption occurred as Kalonzo was introducing members of the Wiper Democratic Movement who had accompanied him to the event.

Footage seen by Viral Tea shows that shortly after one of the party aspirants finished addressing the crowd, the live media coverage suddenly cut out. Moments later, thick clouds of smoke filled the area as supporters fled in different directions.

Shortly after the commotion, Gachagua and other leaders were hurried away along River Road, with plumes of teargas lingering behind them.

The opposition leaders had staged the rally in the CBD after visiting the offices of the Inspector General of Police to raise concerns over alleged police brutality.

Following the incident, the leaders accused the government of being behind the chaos. Gachagua directly pointed fingers at Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, alleging that he ordered officers to disrupt the gathering.

Earlier, tensions flared at the National Police Service (NPS) headquarters after leaders from the opposition coalition were blocked from accessing the premises to meet Inspector General Douglas Kanja.

Addressing the media, Gachagua claimed that Kanja failed to appear for the meeting and instead delegated junior officers to engage them at the gate.

He faulted the police chief, accusing him of frustrating their push for accountability over the Witima church incident.

"Despite scheduling an appointment with leaders of the United Opposition to review and track progress on critical issues, he chose, instead, the convenience of a hide-and-seek game, subjecting us to interactions with junior police officers.

"His continued refusal to act confirms a deliberate strategy to shield perpetrators and normalise impunity. We will return to your office. You can run, but you will not hide, Mr. Kanja Douglas," he stated.

The latest incident comes a day after a similar confrontation in Kitengela, where an ODM faction led by Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino held a rally.

The meeting was cut short after police fired teargas, prompting supporters to scatter for safety. In the aftermath, two people were reportedly killed, while more than 50 others were injured.
