President William Ruto on Tuesday, May 23 accepted the resignation of Esther Ngero, Principal Secretary for Correctional Services, who is leaving office for personal reasons.

The PS communicated her decision to resign through a statement signed by the Head of Public Service and Chief of Staff, Felix Koskei.

"His Excellency The President has received and accepted with regret the resignation of Esther Ngero, Principal Secretary for Correctional Services, who is leaving office for personal reasons.

"The outgoing Principal Secretary was recently reassigned from the State Department for Performance Management & Delivery Services in the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary to the State Department for Correctional Services within the Ministry of Interior & National Administration," read the statement in part.

Koskei noted that in her time in office, Ngero has been instrumental in establishing the institutional framework to support the implementation of Public Service Performance Management and Monitoring for Ministries, State Departments, and State Agencies (MDAs).

A certified accountant by training, Ngero joined the ranks of Principal Secretaries in December 2022 after an almost two-decades career in the petroleum sector.

"The Head of State and government has conveyed his gratitude to Ngero for her service to the nation and wished her the very best in all her future endeavours," added the statement.

Ngero, in the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, worked with Principal Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs Aurelia Rono. She was the Accounting Officer to the Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi.

According to the Constitution, Principal Secretaries are the Accounting Officers of the State Departments to which they are assigned.

They also work with the Cabinet Secretary, who is responsible for implementing government policy.

The news comes after Ruto recently reshuffled seven PSs following the termination of Public Health PS Dr Josephine Mburu and the re-assignment of Peter Kiplagat Tum.

"To facilitate the transition in the vacancy that has arisen within the ranks of principal secretaries, His Excellency the President has on the recommendation of the Public Service Commission nominated Faith Njeri Harrison for appointment as the Principal Secretary, State Department for Performance Management within Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary," Koskei stated in part.
