Renowned American rapper and music icon Kanye Omari West, popularly known as Kanye West or Ye, stunned Kenyans countrywide on Wednesday, February 7 by revealing plans for a concert in Kenya later in 2024.

Ye took to social media to share screenshots of a text conversation detailing proposed tour routes that sent shockwaves across the world, and Nairobi was fronted as one of the proposed locations for his global tour.

According to the proposed schedule, Kanye West's tour is slated to kick off in Canada in June, followed by a series of performances across the United States until August, where he plans to culminate in Mexico.

The American tour is poised to be a huge success, given that Kanye's team is projecting earnings of $16 million (Ksh2.6 billion) from the American leg alone, consisting of 16 shows.

Thereafter the tour will spread across the globe, with projected stops that include Spain, Egypt, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Nigeria, Australia, Japan, and notably, Kenya.

For Kenya which boasts a significant following, the itinerary would see Kanye stage a Nairobi show at the Nyayo National Stadium on December 7, 2024.

The prospect of witnessing the global superstar perform live on Kenyan soil has ignited a frenzy of excitement, with many already speculating about ticket prices and eagerly imagining the electrifying atmosphere of a Kanye West concert in Nairobi.

Viral Tea researched how much it costs to host a Kanye West concert and discovered that one has to have US$8 million, which is Ksh1.28 billion according to current exchange rates.

This was a figure quoted by the Gold Digger hitmaker himself in 2022 after an Instagram account had incorrectly claimed that his booking fee was US$1 million (Ksh160.5 million).

“Please change this. My performance fee is $8 million,” he wrote in his DM to the page, RapThoughtsDaily.

Kanye had reportedly walked away from the 2022 Coachella Music Festival and according to TMZ, he turned down an estimated payout of Ksh1.28 billion.

It was also disclosed that the festival was prepared to cough up Ksh80.3 million ($500,000) in production costs alone just to build the stage he had in mind. However, this all went away when The Weeknd took his place as the 2022 Coachella headliner.

With his Ksh1.3 billion performance fee, you would have to do your independent mathematics to come up with the estimated ticket prices, that is, should the Kenya concert become a reality.

It would also be interesting to see the Kenyan organisers that would be willing to take up the huge assignment given that Ksh1.3 billion could be slightly tricky owing to the current state of the country's economy.

Nonetheless, the inclusion of Nairobi on Kanye's tour itinerary will elevate the city's growing prominence as a hub for international entertainment events.

This revelation has not only excited local fans but also sparked conversations among international media personalities.

Larry Madowo of CNN highlighted the development on his social media, writing, "Kanye West teases shows in Nairobi and Lagos this December. Ye posted this on his Instagram Stories, but will it happen?"

With a "16 million guaranteed upfront" teaser now part of the public domain, the hype for Kanye West's Nairobi show is reaching fever pitch.
