Several passengers are feared dead and scores injured following a road accident which occurred at Nithi Bridge in Meru County on Sunday morning, April 7.

Eyewitnesses alleged that a bus ferrying passengers reportedly experienced a brake failure which led it to veer off the road and overturn.

Seven people were earlier reported to have lost their lives in the accident involving the bus travelling from Meru to Nairobi, but police are yet to confirm the number.

Tharaka Nithi County police commander Zacchaeus Ngeno, who confirmed the incident said "We have not been able to confirm how many fatalities we have had here but we are certain that we have had some fatalities."

Officers embarked on a probe into the fatal accident as some of the affected passengers were taken to hospitals nearby for medical attention.

The county police boss further urged drivers to be more vigilant and ensure their cars are in good shape to avoid accidents.

By the time of going to press, rescue operations were still underway with medics spotted at the scene.

However, area residents thanked the Tharaka Nithi response teams for the quick intervention that saw them quickly rush to the scene and begin rescue operations.

The Nithi bridge which is located in Meru County has been termed a blackspot over the number of accidents that have occurred in the section.

Residents and drivers who ply the route have since called for a reengineering of the area to avoid any future fatalities.

This accident came just hours after five people were killed following a multiple-vehicle accident involving several trucks at Timboroa, Baringo along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.

The accident caused a huge traffic jam on the busy highway as rains affected rescue missions.
