The driver of a truck which was involved in a Monday morning, November 6 accident on the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway killing 11 people is still missing.

Initial reports revealed that the accident happened at 4 a.m. involving an 11-seater shuttle and the truck in the Ngata area at the Salgaa stretch.

Confirming the incident, Nakuru County Commander Samuel Ndanyi revealed that the accident occurred after the matatu collided with the lorry. He initially revealed that eight people died on the spot.

Nakuru Referral Hospital medical superintendent Dr James Waweru revealed that two people died on arrival at the facility while one other died while at the facility.

Several people were also injured in the accident, with casualties rushed to the hospital for advanced treatment.

The matatu was heading towards the Nakuru direction and the truck was heading towards the Eldoret direction before the two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision.

The Salgaa stretch in the Ngata area is a notorious blackspot with many accidents reported in the area.

Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen earlier announced measures to upgrade the stretch to cut down on the number of accidents, which mostly involve lorries and public service vehicles.

Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) started the construction of a concrete barrier four kilometres long in June following Murkomen's directive.

The barrier stretches from Ngata Gate to Ngata Road over the rail bridge and is part of long-term plans to dual the whole road.
