Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei revealed on Monday, June 26 that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party is confident in the leadership of its Secretary-General, Cleophas Malala.

This came hours after National Assembly Deputy Speaker, Gladys Boss Shollei questioned Malala's moves in terms of running affairs of the party under President William Ruto.

In a statement, Cherargei affirmed that UDA still has faith in Malala's performance and management of party affairs and termed Shollei's sentiments as her personal opinion.

"The party leadership led by H.E Dr William Ruto and UDA membership has absolute faith in the performance and management of the party by Secretary General Senator Cleophas Malala. The other comments are individual comments which do not reflect the party's position," stated Cherargei.

During an interview with KTN News, Shollei faulted Malala's leadership tactics, noting that the UDA membership has been impacted by chaos since he assumed the role.

The Uasin Gishu Woman Representative insisted that the party was formed on the principles of peace and development and was not driven by disorganisation.

"My personal opinion as a UDA member is that I am disappointed with the performance of Cleophas Malala. He has been going on the UDA membership drive and many have been violent. I enquired from some of the UDA members and since we started the party, we recruited people in a record of under a year. At that time, there was not a single UDA meeting that was violent.

"The other day he was in Marsabit, there was violence. He went to Isiolo, there was violence. He went to Mombasa and there was violence. I think I am going to talk to UDA members as we begin to ask ourselves whether this person is trying to destroy our party," she lamented.

On the other hand, Malala has been on a charm offensive across the country to stamp the authority of UDA as a ruling party.

His main objective is to attract more UDA party members ahead of the upcoming party polls set for August 2023.

“I received new members into the ruling party led by Former Kajiado Governor, David Ole Nkedienye. Our pursuit remains painting Kenya Yellow, and the Azimio leadership should stop giving President William Ruto ultimatums,” Malala stated on June 6, 2023.

However, some of the recruitment drives have ended in chaos, forcing Malala to end them prematurely in various counties.

For instance, on Saturday, June 24, the membership drive in Mombasa was cancelled after chaos ensued following a misunderstanding between two rival groups.

The duelling factions behind Nyali MP Mohammed Ali and former Mombasa senator Hassan Omar collided, forcing intervention from law enforcement agencies to disperse them before the chaos worsened into a crisis.

"We arrived and found two factions fighting over leadership. As a party, we advocate for democracy. Let everyone campaign and bring people to the party," Malala urged the duo to reconcile their differences.

"However, as a party, we will be neutral in picking regional leaders. During grassroots elections, we shall look at who registered more members to join UDA," he insisted.

The conflicts have exposed the delicate balance the ruling party must strike between expanding its membership and maintaining internal stability, with the party polls viewed as Malala's crucial chances of attracting more members to the UDA to boost its successes.

However, the violent incidents that have marred the recruitment drives have raised serious concerns among party members and the public alike.
