The United States on Monday, September 5 congratulated William Ruto after the Supreme Court of Kenya upheld his election as the fifth president.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated Ruto as well as Kenyans for ensuring that the electoral process went on peacefully until the end.

Blinken also congratulated Azimio la Umoja leader, Raila Odinga, for exercising his democratic right by petitioning the results declared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) at the apex court, even though it was unanimously dismissed by the seven-judge bench led by Chief Justice Martha Koome.

"The United States congratulates William Ruto on his election as president of Kenya, as confirmed by the Supreme Court on September 5.  We also congratulate the people of Kenya on the conclusion of a peaceful electoral process.

"We commend Raila Odinga and other candidates for abiding by the Supreme Court ruling.  Transparent electoral processes and the peaceful adjudication of disputes are testaments to the strength of democratic institutions," Blinken stated in part.

He added that the US is looking forward to strengthening the partnership with Kenya as Ruto's government prepares to take power officially.

"The United States and Kenya share a strong and longstanding partnership based on a commitment to democracy, security, and economic prosperity.  We look forward to enhancing this partnership with President Ruto and his new government," he added.
