The United Kingdom (UK) has dismissed reports that it has been supporting specific candidates in the just-concluded general elections in Kenya.

UK High Commissioner to Kenya, Jane Marriott, revealed in a series of tweets on Monday, August 22 that neither her, nor the British nation, has been supporting specific presidential candidates in the polls, nor their parties which they vied under.

She noted that the matter of the elections was one that concerns the people of Kenya and that the UK only meets political figures to explain its programmes as well as discuss its partnerships with Kenya.

“There has been a lot of misinformation circulating in the last few days about the UK & myself with regards to Kenya’s elections. For the avoidance of doubt, I want to categorically reiterate that the UK does not support or have a view on any candidates or parties in elections,” Marriott stated.

“Who Kenyans elect is a matter for the people of Kenya. We meet people from across the political spectrum to explain the UK’s programmes and partnership with Kenya, including independent institutions."

Marriott then shared a joint statement by the embassies and high commissions in Kenya which commended the country for holding a peaceful election.

“We commend the people of Kenya for the peace and calm displayed on Election Day, the IEBC’s organisation of the elections, and the positive roles played by civil society, religious and business leaders, and the security sector. Kenya has set an example to the region and continent as a whole,” the statement read.

Speculations have been rife on whether the UK has been supporting President-elect, William Ruto. Pending the outcome of the presidential results at the Supreme Court, various international communities have been congratulating him for the latest milestone in his life.

Russia's Embassy in Kenya became the latest to congratulate William Ruto after being elected as Kenya's fifth Head of State.

"The Embassy of the Russia Federation in the Republic of Kenya has the honour to congratulate H.E Dr William Samoei Ruto upon the announcement of him being elected as the President of Kenya.

"The Embassy of Russia is looking forward to continuing and further developing comprehensive and mutually beneficial cooperation with Kenya. We are confident that the friendly relations between our two countries and peoples will be reinvigorated and further strengthened," the statement read in part.

It is worth it to note that Russia has been at war with Ukraine after the country, under President Vladimir Putin, invaded the latter on February 24, 2022. This was a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War that began in 2014.

It caused Europe's largest refugee crisis since World War II, with more than 9.1 million Ukrainians fleeing the country and a third of the population getting displaced.

Kenya, led by Ambassador Martin Kimani, Kenya's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), has been leading in fielding criticisms against Russia's actions to invade Ukraine, which won the support of Ukrainian Ambassador to Kenya, Andriy Pravednyk.
