Reports indicate that the militants, heavily armed with various weapons, stormed the camp and swiftly took control on Sunday morning.
The region has seen a surge in Al Shabaab attacks, with the militant group frequently targeting border counties.
Just days ago, the United States Embassy in Kenya issued a security alert advising its citizens against travelling to these areas.
In a March 18 travel advisory, the Embassy identified Kenya-Somalia border counties, including Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera, as high-risk zones and cautioned against visiting them.
"Kenya-Somalia border counties (Garissa, Wajir, Mandera), Tana River County, and coastal areas north of Malindi due to terrorism and kidnapping," part of the statement read.
The embassy also warned of banditry attacks near the Ethiopian border, stating, "Parts of Marsabit and Turkana Counties within 30 miles (50 kilometres) of the Ethiopian border due to cross-border incursions."
In early February, five Kenyan chiefs were kidnapped by suspected Al Shabaab militants in Mandera County, and their whereabouts remain unknown.
The administrators were on their way from Wargadud to Elwak Town for official duties when they were seized.
