CCTV footage emerged on Wednesday, August 9 showing the events that transpired before a police officer was shot dead during a robbery incident at the Mihango area in Kayole Estate, Nairobi.

The officer attached to the Makadara Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) identified as David Mayaka, was driving home with his wife, Hellen Kemunto on Tuesday night, August 8 when the incident occurred, which also led to the wife being shot and wounded in the leg.

Preliminary police reports indicated that the couple had stopped in the Hurlingham area to fix a car puncture when three men on a motorcycle approached them pretending to help the two in fixing the puncture. However, the matter turned confrontational with the officer retreating to his car for his gun.

The officer, in the footage seen by Viral Tea, is heard pleading with the thugs to take whatever possessions they wanted from him, but the armed thugs were on a mission to end his life, with one of them heard instructing to shoot Mayaka dead.

Despite the officer's pleas to the thugs to take whatever they wanted, four gunshots rented the air in the ensuing scuffle before the thugs sped away with Kemunto screaming for help. One of the thugs had opened fire, shooting the officer in the abdomen.

Kemunto was shot in the thigh after she was robbed of her mobile phone.

"He has been shot on the side he is lying on, he is bleeding a lot, please help me rush him to Komarock Modern (hospital)," the wife is heard pleading with first responders who began rushing to the scene of the crime.

Moments later, a police Landcruiser arrived at the scene sparking some hope in the injured wife's side.

"Even the cops are here. Please help me, he is a policeman like you...we have little children. We have been shot by three men who were on motorbikes. Help me as I've also been shot," she is heard pleading with the officers.

However, the police Landcruiser was seen driving off the scene after stopping momentarily, leaving many wondering if the police who responded to the incident had gone back for reinforcements or opted not to assist the stricken couple.

According to the police, the gang who had the number plates of their motorcycle concealed, had escaped without stealing anything from the victims.

Kemunto tried to pull the husband to the car and drive to the hospital in vain before the police arrived to find her crying uncontrollably while holding the bleeding and lifeless officer.

The two were rushed to hospital where the police officer succumbed. Police added that the gang was on a random robbery spree when they met the couple who were headed home then.

The body of Mayaka was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other procedures. A team of detectives was sent from the Nairobi Area to back up their Kayole counterparts in hot pursuit of the gang.

“The wife is in stable condition. No arrest has been made so far but we have a team on the ground looking for the gang behind the shooting,” Nairobi Regional Commander Adamson Bungei told the media.

The incident sent chills across social media as many netizens wondered if the couple were unfortunate victims of the culprits' robbing spree or if it was a targeted assassination given that they concealed the motorbike's number plates to avoid detection.

The DCI was yet to give an update on the manhunt launched on the armed robbers by the time of publishing this article.
