Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has declared Wednesday, June 28 a public holiday.

In a Gazette notice dated Monday, June 26, Kindiki revealed that the declaration was so that the Muslim faithful can celebrate Eid-Ul-Adha. The declaration is in line with the Public Holidays Act.

"It is notified for the general information of the public that in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (2) and part II of the schedule, as read with section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Wednesday, June 28, 2023, shall be a public holiday to mark Eid-Ul-Adha (Idd-Ul-Azha)," the statement read in part.

Defence CS Aden Duale appreciated CS Kindiki for recognising and declaring the public holiday, sharing the Gazette notice on his social media pages and its legitimacy was confirmed by a source at the Ministry who spoke to Viral Tea.

"On behalf of the Muslim community in Kenya, I extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Government, through my colleague CS - Interior, Prof. Kithure Kindiki for the recognition and proclamation of 28th June 2023, as a public holiday to mark Eid-Ul-Adha," he stated.

Section 3 of the Public Holidays Act explains that dates determined in accordance with the Islamic faith, are to be declared public holidays.

According to Islamic teaching, Idd-ul-Adha (the feast of slaughtering) takes place on the 10th day of the third month after Ramadhan.

Idd-ul-Adha is an Islamic festival to commemorate the willingness of Abraham to follow Allah's command to sacrifice his son. It also marks the end of Hajj, the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca.

It is one of the two Idd celebrations, Idd-ul-Adha and Idd-ul-Fitr, and is often considered the holier of the two.

During the festival, Muslims around the world gather to mark one of the holiest days in the religious calendar.

After confirming the sighting of the crescent Dhul Hijjah moon on June 30, 2022, Saudi Arabia announced the celebration of Eid al Adha in the Kingdom on Saturday, July 9, 2022, which is also when UAE, Qatar, Jordan, Kuwait and other Arab states marked it.

Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) and the Muslim Association of Canada (MAC) announced that Eid al Adha there would be celebrated on Saturday, July 9, 2022.

Wifaqul Ulama of the United Kingdom and Majlis Ugama Islam Singapore too issued separate statements to announce that Eid al Adha would be celebrated in the countries on Sunday, July 10, 2022.

India usually celebrates both the festivals of Eid-ul-Fitra and Eid-ul-Adha a day after Saudi Arabia.
