CS Mutua, Wavinya Ndeti Clash Over Alleged Impeachment Plot: Leave Machakos Alone
The governor made it clear that she won’t be intimidated by the CS’s alleged attempts to sway the people of Machakos using outside political pressure.

A heated war of words has broken out between Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti and her predecessor, now Labour Cabinet Secretary (CS) Alfred Mutua, as Wavinya tries to fend off an impeachment attempt.
The escalating clash comes amid a power struggle between the two over influence in the vote-rich Ukambani region. On Sunday, April 6, Wavinya, who is facing an impeachment threat from Muthwani Ward MCA Dominic Maitha—an ally of Mutua—accused the CS of meddling in county affairs and issued a stern warning.
“You are not the governor of Machakos now; leave Machakos alone, let me run my Machakos. When you were running Machakos as the governor, I never interfered," she said.
"I am dedicated to serving the people of Machakos, and I will not allow anyone to sow discord through external political influence. I will not tolerate any schemes to derail my administration from the work we have committed ourselves to. I'm sending a strong warning to our detractors. Your plans will not prevail," she declared.
"When I served as Machakos Governor and Kivutha Kibwana served in Makueni and Malombe in Kitui, we were always fighting. Our projects were being diminished. This meant that we were not able to serve our people as expected. Right now, I see that this is back in Ukambani," Mutua stated.
"I see all the speakers and the governors are on the verge of being impeached. When this happens, the rich who disagree with each other will be okay, but the ordinary Kenyan will suffer. I want to urge the Ukambani leaders to maintain unity to bring development projects to Ukambani."
Mutua concluded by offering to meet with all governors, speakers, and MCAs to come up with a plan for peaceful and effective collaboration. However, he cautioned that governors who have failed to deliver on their campaign promises could find themselves voted out in 2027.
"For now, let us reduce disagreements and work together to grow as the Ukambani region, where I was born," he stated.
This comes just a week after Mutua spoke out against any moves to impeach governors in the Ukambani counties. In a statement released on Sunday, March 30, following a meeting with Kitui County Assembly leaders, he urged for unity among the region’s leadership.
"I do not and will not support any impeachment of leaders in Ukambani counties. I stand against the impeachment of County Assembly Speakers and Governors, including H.E. Malombe of Kitui, H.E. Wavinya Ndeti of Machakos, and H.E. Mutula Kilonzo Jr. of Makueni. This is the time to unite, not create confusion and chaos," he said.
Mutua served as Machakos governor from 2013 until 2022. After completing his two terms, he was succeeded by Wavinya Ndeti, who was sworn in as the county’s second governor in August 2022.
Since then, CS Mutua has been actively engaging leaders from Machakos, Kitui, and Makueni counties in high-level meetings — including one with President William Ruto on March 27, where they secured a Ksh5.2 billion development package for the region.
In a follow-up meeting with Kitui County leaders, Mutua reaffirmed his stance against any impeachment efforts targeting the three governors, naming each one and once again pushing for regional unity.
