The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has warned Kenyans against purchasing THEMRA Epimedyumlu Macun, a popular drug also nicknamed 'Asali ya wazee' manufactured from honey.

In a statement on Wednesday, November 22 signed by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr.Fred Siyoi, PPB noted that the drug has been in circulation within the Kenyan market, with its manufacturers promoting it by claiming it possesses alleged sexual enhancement properties.

The manufacturers, according to the board, also claimed that the drug possesses 100 per cent natural properties and is herbal in nature.

"Consequently, the PPB has conducted thorough tests on the honey-based product and detected significant adulteration of the product with high levels of a conventional active pharmaceutical ingredient, known as Sildenafil, which is prescribed for the management of erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension.

"The PPB informs the public that Sildenafil is classified as a Prescription-Only Medicine and its excessive consumption poses serious safety and health hazards," stated PPB in part.

Sildenafil is a medication that treats erectile dysfunction and is the active ingredient in Viagra.

As a result, PPB strongly cautioned the public against the use or involvement in the trade, distribution, wholesale, retail, issuance or dispensing of this product.

"Any person found dealing with or distributing these products will be subjected to legal action.

"Further, the PPB advises the public against the use of health products that have not obtained approval from the PPB," added PPB.

The board further encouraged both the general public and healthcare providers to promptly report any suspected substandard and falsified medical products to the PPB using the necessary channels.

Sexual enhancement supplements are supplements made from a natural substance. They may contain nutrients called amino acids, vitamins, minerals or herbs like palmetto, Yohimbe or maca, with most products coming in tablets, caplets or tablets.

Sexual enhancement supplements have become more prevalent as the population ages and more people are diagnosed with disorders that require medication that may lead to sexual problems as side effects.

In addition, increased consumption of alcohol and smoking have increased the prevalence of sexual health problems, such as erectile dysfunction.
