Suna East MP Junet Mohamed lit up the National Assembly Committee on Appointment on Monday, October 17 with his back-and-forth against Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary nominee Alfred Mutua.

Mutua disclosed that his net worth is Ksh420 million owing to businesses he owns in the country, among them the A&L hotel in Machakos County which he owns alongside former partner, Lillian Nganga.

“My net worth is set at approximately Ksh420 million. Current sources of income include businesses here and there, hotels and apartments,” Mutua said, adding that he was worth Ksh200 million when he was Machakos Governor.

Junet however challenged Mutua to explain how he was worth Ksh420 million, yet he owns the hotel at the same time.

Mutua responded by stating that his substantial ownership of the hotel was not adequately realised because he built it with a bank loan he is still servicing.

Here is a snippet of the conversation:

Junet Mohamed: Do you own A&L Hotel in Machakos?

Alfred Mutua: It is my hotel, I built it with a loan

Junet Mohamed: You cannot own that hotel if your net worth is Ksh420 million.

To which Mutua explained: “It is still on loan so when you own something that is under huge credit, it is very hard to say it is yours unless you’ve cleared the credit and that is why my value in the hotel is much less than I would like it to be. One day in 10 years' time when I own it 100 per cent then my value will be able to rise."

Mutua disclosed that during his tenure as Machakos Governor, he was given Ksh140 million to buy luxury vehicles.

Having come from a country where there were only four ambulances at the time, he opted to buy 16 second-hand vehicles at a price of Ksh35 million and used the rest to buy 80 ambulances.

"I can assure you that within a few weeks, I will deal with these cartels owned by government officials. I have some tricks up my sleeve," he promised.

He added that he intends to create a system whereby children of the poor will be able to sit on the same table as those of the rich.

In his role as the Foreign Affairs CS, Mutua assured that he will ensure to have bilaterals with many countries signed so that Kenyans can travel to other countries without requiring a Visa and strengthen the ranking of the country's passports.

"I request you to approve my nomination so that I can have the opportunity to transform this country. I want to make sure that Kenya becomes a country that trades & does not beg to get aid."

Mutua also promised that if appointed to be the Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary he will make his first trip to Saudi Arabia to try and resolve the problem of mistreatment of Kenyans, especially in the Gulf.

He cleared the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from the mistreatment of Kenyans and promised to involve the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to investigate the deaths of Kenyans that have happened in the Gulf.

“It’s a shame that we’ve lost 85 Kenyans in the last three months, especially in Saudi Arabia. We need to send a message that no Kenyan will die overseas and the government does nothing about it,” said Mutua.

He also promised to publish scholarship opportunities so that people can get opportunities to travel abroad without having to 'know somebody'.
