President William Ruto's Kenya Kwanza coalition has the majority members in the 13th parliament.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula declared on Thursday, October 6 while naming Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah as the National Assembly Majority Leader.

The Speaker maintained that in factoring in the post-election formations, Kenya Kwanza was the majority coalition in the National Assembly with 179 MPs against Azimio la Umoja coalition ’s 157.

"What is clear from the constitution is that the leader of the majority party must lead either a party or a coalition of parties in the National Assembly. I invite the house to note my emphasis on the word either," he said.

He added that Kenya Kwanza is a coalition of parties with the majority members and as such satisfied the dictates of the law as the bonafide majority side.

The Speaker referred to article 108 of the Constitution which states that the Leader of the Majority Party will be the leader of the largest party or coalition of parties.

He added that in the last general election, it was evident that Azimio elected to behave as several political parties in several categories of election and as one political party as regards the election of the president.

"It is without a doubt that if it were to be considered as a political party, Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party has no elected member in this house today as no member was elected under its banner," Wetangula stated.

Wetangula further put Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu on the spot over inconsistencies in documents she had shared.

“May I report that surprisingly the Registrar of Political Parties this morning submitted to me the documents said to be the certified copies of the coalition agreements for the Kenya Kwanza Coalition and the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party. A perusal of the documents presented by the honourable Junet Mohammed and the Registrar of political parties reveals glaring inconsistencies in both documents.

"With regard to signatures, there is no uniformity in the manner in which the various pages of the documents have been signed off. Some pages in the documents contain fewer signatures than others while page three of both documents, in particular, contains signatures that are hardly visible. The pagination of both documents is also inconsistent. I am inclined to think that these are superimpositions.”

Deputising Ichung’wah as the Leader of the Majority will be Kilifi North counterpart Owen Baya.

South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro will be the new Majority Whip and Marsabit Woman representative Naomi Waqo will serve as the Deputy Majority Whip.

Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi will be the Leader of the Minority side and will be deputised by Kathiani lawmaker Robert Mbui.
