The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced that Kenyatta Avenue will tonight be closed in phases for more than two weeks.

In a statement, the authority revealed that the 19-day closure will run from Tuesday, July 25 to Saturday, August 12.

KeNHA explained that the closure will allow for the re-installation of a cross culvert at the Uhuru Highway Roundabout.

To avoid massive traffic inconveniences, the exercise will take place for seven hours at night, between 9.00 pm and 4.00 am.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority hereby informs the public that a section of Kenyatta Avenue (at Uhuru Highway Roundabout), shall be closed in phases between Tuesday 25th July 2023 to Saturday 12th August 2023. The closure shall be done at off-peak hours from 9.00 pm to 4.00 am," read the statement in part.

Regarding the phased closure, Phase 1 will take place between July 25 to July 26 while Phase 2 will take place between July 28 to August 1.

The third phase will take place between August 3 and August seven while the fourth will be concluded on August 12.

"Motorists are urged to exercise caution and road courtesy as they cooperate with police and marshalls for better management of traffic," the statement read in part.

Kenyatta Avenue is a dual carriage highway connecting the Central Business District (CBD) and Upper Hill and is considered one of the most critical roads in the city.

The highway serves as a vital link between Moi Avenue, Uhuru Highway and Valley Road as well as State House Road and Milimani Road and is used by matatus heading to Upper Hill, Kilimani, Hurlingham, Ngong Road and Kawangware among others.

On October 7, 2022, Uhuru Highway was partially closed for three days for purposes of construction works to uplift a section of the busy road.

Uhuru Highway was one of the most heavily affected roads by the construction of the Nairobi Expressway, which now towers above it.

The Ksh87.9 billion flagship project by former President Uhuru Kenyatta won plaudits for aiding in reducing traffic between Westlands and the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by providing an express journey between the two areas- at a fee that is.
