Social media influencer, Kevin Mboya, has broken his silence after nearly three days of being unresponsive on Twitter following the short narration of his trip from Nairobi to Kwale to surprise his girlfriend.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel in the early morning hours of Sunday, January 29, Mboya admitted that his 8 hr 35 min journey from Nairobi to Kwale to surprise his girlfriend, who was celebrating her birthday then, had backfired in the end.

He returned to the capital with the same flowers he was meant to surprise her with, further noting that he was emotionally in a bad place and unable to divulge further details on how the show of love went south.

Watch the video:

"I arrived well from Kwale, so four days ago I went there to see her. I went with flowers but I came back with them because it passes a message.

"Right now I'm not emotionally okay in terms of revealing to you all exactly what happened although physically I look like I'm okay but emotionally I cannot say that I'm in a good state of mind to share with everyone who is concerned about me of what happened," he said.

According to Mboya, he went to the coastal county lit up with love but returned with a broken heart, promising to reveal more about the trip, 502 kilometres between the two towns.

"I went to Kwale with love but I've come back with room for more love. Thank you for your concern...more about what happened in Kwale, I'll share it soon," he added, taking poses with each sentiment while looking at the bouquet of flowers in despair.

Many had initially wondered about the whereabouts of Mboya following his last update on Thursday, January 26 prior to this one after he cheered them up with his romantic act, leading thousands of Kenyans On Twitter (KOT) ranging from celebrities to journalists, fellow influencers, government parastatals and media houses to frantically inquire about his whereabouts.

However, when he finally broke his silence, a majority of the comments were composed of netizens expressing their sympathy towards him following the act of love gone sour. Others believed he was clout chasing.

This whole ordeal brings to the fore the narrative of long-distance relationships and how a large number of Kenyans don't believe in their endurance. Studies show that at least 42 per cent of long-distance relationships eventually fail, which occurs after you share intimate things with someone who is part of your life even if they are not physically present all the time.

There comes a time in a long-distance relationship when it lasts for too long. For the first couple of months, you may wish to be with your partner, but there are things you can do with people around you and fun things you can do online with your partner.

Signs Your Long-Distance Relationship Is Failing

  • You feel sad, upset, and miserable more often than you feel happy and fulfilled.
  • You or your partner have lost interest in your long-distance relationship.
  • You rarely talk with your long-distance partner.
  • Your partner is not making any effort to come to see you.
  • You rarely visit each other.
  • You don’t have a plan for moving in together.
  • You don’t share your feelings or intimate things.
  • You’re feeling confused about why you are in this relationship.
  • You tried fixing the problems, but nothing works.
  • Your feelings changed, or you have developed feelings for someone else.
  • The sexual frustration is getting too much.
  • You stayed in a long-distance relationship for a long time, and now you have drifted apart

Many long-distance relationships fail because couples don’t acknowledge that a long-distance relationship can only work healthily for a short period. When you are in a romantic relationship, you need to have your partner next to you, otherwise, your relationship is friendship.

To fix problems in a long-distance relationship, you have to be at least willing to explore the issues and make some changes. Both you and your partner must be interested in this relationship and in making it work.

For example, if you are fighting because of misunderstandings, you need to work on your communication. If you’re struggling with the lack of physical intimacy, you can visit each other more frequently.

However, if your feelings have changed and you drifted apart, it’s time to reassess your relationship and consider moving on.
