KTN News anchor, Ken Mijungu on Friday, February 15 offered to contribute for Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah to buy him a new car after he was involved in an accident in Kisumu while heading to Busia.

The accident, which occurred around the Ojola area, happened after the trailer driver lost control crashing into his vehicle and throwing him off the road.

Taking to X, the prime-time news anchor who also runs multi-million side hustles that include helicopter hire and car renting businesses commended the human rights activist for fighting very hard for the welfare of Kenyans and thus, did not deserve to drive a Nissan Advan.

Mijungu thus offered to mobilise a funds campaign drive so that Kenyans could contribute for Omtatah to acquire a Mercedes Benz S-Class.

“I'm very sorry, my friend Senator Okiya Omtatah. You cannot however drive a Nissan Advan. You are prohibited by your status.

"With the work you have done for Kenyans even if we will fundraise to buy you an S-Class we have to,” Mijungu wrote.

He also indicated that he reached out to a local car dealer which responded with photos of the sleek German machine, which is usually preferred by the elite and wealthy in Kenya's society.

Though the accident sent shockwaves throughout the country owing to Omtatah's popularity against the Finance Act 2023, Kenyans were surprised at the type of car he was driving at the time of the crash.

For many, it is unheard of for a man of Omtatah's stature to drive around in a Nissan AD - also called a Nissan Wingroad - which is a simple subcompact van and wagon manufactured by Japan's giant motor company Nissan.

According to various car-selling websites in Kenya, one can buy the car for as little as Ksh600,000 and as much as Ksh900,000.

The car is also widely used by traders to transport goods to far-flung places given its structural make - spacious boot, plain, hard seats and fuel-economic engine.

Being a senator and a highly-respected official in Kenya, people wondered why Omtatah did not go for the high-end fuel guzzlers popular with his colleagues, given that Parliament does give expensive car grants to all elected members to purchase a stately vehicle of their choice.

While many praised the senator for his 'humility' and apparent connection to 'the people', many others urged him to take his safety seriously and buy a better vehicle as the role he plays in Kenyan politics is too crucial for him to drive around in such a lowly car.

Omtatah who spoke to the media after the accident revealed that the trailer hit his vehicle as he attempted to swerve.

The legislator, who was with his driver, survived the accident without sustaining any injuries, adding that the trailer landed in a ditch several meters away.

Narrating the horrific incident, he added that he swerved after realizing the trailer had lost control, noting that he was lucky to have narrowly escaped death, attributing the safety belt as a lifesaver as it held him intact on the chair thus protecting him from getting injured, even though the vehicle landed on the side of the road intact.

The driver of the trailer upon questioning stated that the brakes failed to function, forcing him to swerve from the main road, crashing into the senator's vehicle.

Officers from Maseno Police Station processed the scene and launched investigations into the accident as Omtatah was able to return home after police provided him with a Land Cruiser.
