Azimio la Umoja principal and NARC Kenya party leader, Martha Karua on Monday, March 27 warned police officers against arresting coalition leader Raila Odinga over the mass protests in Nairobi.

Speaking during a roadside rally in Kibra, Karua advised Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome against ordering Raila's arrest for participating in the demos, adding that he will have rattled the whole country.

She called for the cost of unga to be lowered while warning the IG that arresting Raila would trigger a mass reaction, mobilising Kenyans to come out in full support if the police go to the extent of touching him.

"To those swindlers planning to arrest Raila. If they touch him, they'll have touched the whole of Kenya.

"I'm pleading that if they get close to Raila, we will come out all of us. They should be ready to kill all of us. The price of unga must go down," she said.

It is worth it to note that Karua on Sunday, March 26 dared the IG to arrest her during the protests if at all the demonstrations are illegal.

However, she hinted at karma biting back on the former police boss for any mistakes he would make during his tenure.

“You have said that you can handcuff us tomorrow, come handcuff me. Tomorrow will be your day to handcuff me without any mistakes.

"But your day will come when you will be handcuffed for your mistakes. You will be punished according to the constitution,” Karua said, adding that she overcame threats from the Moi regime, and will not be cowed.

Speaking during a church service in Embakasi, Nairobi County, Raila also challenged the IG to make due his threat and arrest him in person instead of deploying police officers to do it on his behalf.

“Mr Koome, stop the threats. You said you would arrest me. I am ready to be arrested. Don’t send the police, come and arrest me yourself. I will be in the front line, let’s meet face to face,” he said.

Raila also accused the police of behaving like colonial forces and being inhumane to the protesters who have been taking to the streets every Monday and Thursday.

He vowed that the protests will go on until his demands are met by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), which he claims rigged the August 9th 2023 general election in favour of President William Ruto.

During a press briefing on Sunday, IG Koome maintained that the planned mass action was illegal, adding that the police force was ready and equipped for that day and will arrest those planning to disrupt businesses and destroy property.

“I have not approved of any demonstrations. We are ready as the police force to ensure there is calm in all parts of the country, we have enough Land Cruisers to arrest people regardless of their status,” said Koome.

"People are allowed to come to the city. However, if you have plans to bring violence and if you are armed with offensive weapons such as machetes, stones, and clubs, you will face the music."

For most of Monday, running battles were witnessed between police officers and protesters in Kibra and Mathare in Nairobi and Kisumu.

The second week of the demonstrations took a daring turn after a group of youth was spotted invading a piece of land belonging to the family of former President Uhuru Kenyatta along the Eastern Bypass.

Another group had stormed Raila's East Africa Spectre Limited company along Mombasa Road and destroyed property.
