Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Ole Sena, the final witness in Sharon Otieno's murder case, confirmed on Friday, June 14 that former governor Okoth Obado is the biological father of Sharon's unborn daughter.

This is as the prosecution had closed its case in the murder trial of Sharon Otieno after calling a total of 42 witnesses in the case.

The last witness to take the stand was Chief Inspector Sena, who described and gave an elaborate theory that led to his recommendation of charging the three accused persons with two counts of murder.

In his testimony, the court heard that, on the fateful day, the deceased received a call from Michael Oyamo, the second accused person, who was also the former governor’s assistant.

They agreed to meet later that day at a hotel in Rongo, where it was unknown to her that she would meet her death on the same day.

Ole Sena’s testimony further confirmed to the court that according to the DNA tests conducted, Okoth Obado is 99.99+ the father of baby Sharon, and that the postmortem examination of the deceased’s body revealed that Sharon's death was due to force trauma.

"Following the closure of the prosecution’s case, the court is set to make a ruling on whether the three accused persons have a case to answer.

"The matter will be mentioned virtually on June 20, 2024, for directions," stated the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in part.

With the trials concluded, the court is now set to rule on whether the three accused persons should stand trial.

The prosecution has urged the court to find that Okoth Obado and the other two accused have a case to answer and should proceed to defend themselves.

Immediately after the closure of the trial, lead defence lawyer, Senior Counsel Kioko Kilukumi, told Justice Cecilia Githua that “he would submit for no case to answer in favour of Obado.”

“Your Ladyship Justice Githua, I will be making submissions for no case to answer against Obado then urge this court to acquit him since evidence tendered herein exonerates him from the murder," Kilukumi said.

The accused are facing charges related to the murder of the former Rongo University student, whose body was discovered in a forest.

They are specifically charged with the murder of Sharon and her unborn child on the night of September 3, 2018, in Homa Bay County. At the time of her death, Sharon was seven months pregnant.
