President William Ruto has announced that the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) will reduce the prices of fuel by Ksh10 today, Sunday, April 14.

While speaking in Nyeri County during a church service, the Head of State indicated that the reduction is part of the government's plan to lower the cost of living.

"Unga was Ksh200, now it has gone down to almost Ksh100. The dollar was at 160, now it is around 120, and not yet. Even today, the price of fuel will go down by Ksh10.

"It is because we are making the right decisions, not popular decisions," he announced.

His announcement comes hours after the Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura revealed that EPRA would announce reduced pump prices later today.

According to Mwaura, that was a testament to the work the Kenya Kwanza government was doing to ensure it was delivering the promises it made before the 2022 elections.

“A major announcement on the reduction of fuel prices shall be made today at 3:00 pm by EPRA. This will go a long way in reducing the cost of living in the country for hustlers and Kenyans at large,” he said.

A previous report by the regulatory authority indicated that Kenya’s fuel consumption reduced in 2023, with Kenyans consuming 4.3 million cubic meters of fuel down from 4.5 million cubic meters during a similar period in 2022.

During that time, the government increased the fuel tax from eight per cent to 16 per cent, leading to a significant increase in the prices of super petrol, diesel, and kerosene across the country.

However, in December 2023, the demand for petroleum products increased because of increased travel attributed to the festive season.

“The overall domestic demand for petroleum products declined by 3.01% to 2,717,699.16 m3 compared to a corresponding period in 2022. This reduction in consumption could be attributed to suppressed demand,” EPRA stated.

“The demand for petroleum products through the period under review was steady with the highest consumption level being recorded in August 2023.”

Going to today's review, the last monthly review announced on Thursday, March 14 read as follows; Super Petrol prices reduced by Ksh7.21. Diesel was reduced by Ksh5.09 and Kerosene by Ksh4.49.

In Nairobi, Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene had retailed at Ksh199.15, Ksh190.38 and Ksh188.74 during the period between March 15 and April 14, 2024.
