Former Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko spoke on the campaign deal he struck with President William Ruto on July 30, 2022, which he claimed saw him being offered six positions in the event Ruto won the 2022 general elections.

The former governor was backing Azimio la Umoja leader, Raila Odinga's presidency prior to the elections before he pulled a shock move by shifting to the Kenya Kwanza camp under Ruto, who was the Deputy President at the time.

The move saw him reach an engagement agreement/Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ruto which was depicted in six positions in which he was promised as a return favour if Kenya Kwanza won the polls, which it did.

The positions he claimed he was offered include:

  1. One CS National Government
  2. Three PSs National Government
  3. Four Ambassadors
  4. Three CEC's Mombasa County
  5. Three Chief officers in Mombasa County
  6. Two CEC's Nairobi county
  7. Three Chief officers in Mombasa County

Nearly nine months later, Sonko remains without a job and some of the positions he was promised were allocated to others.

One Zakariah Okodoi had on Wednesday, April 26 asked him on Twitter: "What happened with your six positions you were to appoint in the Kenya Kwanza Government".

Sonko responded by alleging that the Kenya Kwanza government had played him and reneged on its promise, however noting that he moved on from the disappointment.

"Walinienjoy but Hakuna shida (They played me but there's no problem). We live to fight another day. Mungu halali (God never sleeps)," he replied.

Sonko had explained at the time that he dove into the agreement with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to be guaranteed jobs and opportunities to the people of both Mombasa and Nairobi, the two biggest cities in the country.

Even though Sonko would eventually be awarded either of those positions, he would be met with difficulties occupying them since legal implications would have followed and haunted him since his impeachment as Nairobi Governor.

In 2022, Sonko was barred from holding any public office, contesting or being elected as the Governor of Mombasa or any other County.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had also revoked his clearance to vie for the county seat in the August 9 general elections, according to a letter to him from the County Returning Officer for Mombasa County.

The decision came after the Supreme Court on July 15, 2022, ruled that Sonko was removed from the Nairobi County office fairly. It had dismissed his appeal on grounds that it lacked jurisdiction to determine it.

"In adherence to the Supreme Court judgement, you are therefore disqualified from holding any public office and thus disqualified from contesting and being elected as the Governor of Mombasa County or any other county. Your candidature is invalidated and your certificate revoked," read the letter in part.

Subsequently, the Supreme Court evoked Article 75(3) of the Constitution, which bars a person impeached from a public office from holding any other state office.
