Uhuru Kicked Out Of Jubilee Party

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has been replaced as the Jubilee Party leader by nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege in an acting capacity.

Speaking outside Jubilee party offices on Tuesday, May 2, East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Kanini Kega, allied to President William Ruto, confirmed Chege's appointment in his capacity as Secretary-General.

This is despite his position being contested by Jeremiah Kioni, who is allied to Uhuru, with both Kioni and Kega proclaiming themselves as Jubilee Party Secretary-Generals.

"We have 28 members and today we held a meeting comprising 22 members with 3 apologies; hence our side is the majority. Hence, we resolved that the upcoming meeting constituted by Uhuru goes against our party's Constitution," he stated.

"According to the Constitution, a retired president should not be involved in any politics, six months after leaving office. From the time he left office, his time lapsed in March 2023."

Kega, while confirming that he was still the Jubilee Secretary-General, according to the resolutions made in a meeting between party officials, noted that Uhuru had ceased from leading the party, and thus cannot run its affairs.

"Uhuru ceased from being the Jubilee party leader hence he cannot run any party affairs. The statement that he delegated concerning the convention of the meeting is null and void based on the Constitution. According to the party constitution, I as the Secretary-General ought to be the one convening such a meeting.

"The NEC Committee resolved that Sabina will serve as the acting party leader until the time we convene a National Delegates Convention (NDC) where we will select the leader who will run the party moving forward," he went on.

The replacement comes after Uhuru had called for a special National Delegates Conference (NDC), which Kega deemed unconstitutional. A notice by the party dated Friday, April 28 revealed that the meeting will take place at Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi on Monday, May 22, 2023.

"Pursuant to Articles 8.1 and 10.1 of the Jubilee Party Constitution, notice is hereby issued for a Special National Delegates Convention to be held on the 22nd of May 2023," Uhuru stated in part.

Among the meeting's agenda is to review party policies, which had led to a row between two factions, one allied to Uhuru and the other, to President William Ruto.

The delegates will also formulate party policies which will be expected to form part of the Jubilee Party constitution in the near future.
