US-based Kenyan comedienne and internet sensation Elsa Majimbo on Saturday, January 20 sparked a backlash over a video where she advocated for women to be friends with Nigerian men.

In the video she shared on her X account, the unapologetic content creator heaped praises on a friend of hers who had flown to Los Angeles (LA) from New York to treat her on her 21st birthday.

"On the night before my 21st birthday, I received a call from one of my closest friends, Laolu, and he asked me what are you doing for your birthday.

"To me, birthdays are not a big deal, so I told him nothing, and he was like, 'are you joking, you are turning 21, you can drink in America now legally, you have to do something,'" Majimbo recounted.

"He was like, 'do you want me to fly to LA because he lives in New York?' I said no because it's a very expensive flight and it's a 5 or 6 hours flight. The next day, 11 a.m., my phone rings and Laolu is on the phone, and he is like 'I'm in LA, meet me at 1.00 p.m, we are going shopping, happy birthday.' He hang up."

Majimbo went on to expound details of the lavish birthday celebration arranged by Laolu, which included a shopping spree on a high-end street near Beverly Hills, despite the comedienne's attempt to decline the extravagant gifts.

"He took me shopping, and after we went shopping, and I needed to buy groceries, and he was like 'I will take you.'

"So we go and we are hanging out, I'm buying these things, and he paid for everything, takes my things, and drops me at my place, he was so sweet," Majimbo added.

The content creator emphasized that this was the greatest platonic love she had ever encountered.

According to her, Laolu got to his hotel and waited for her to get ready for dinner, which she said she enjoyed before he flew back to New York the next day.

"If he can fly and come after I said I am not celebrating my birthday. If I can do it you can too, that's my reasoning," Majimbo added.

She captioned the 3:49 clip 'Highly recommend being friends with a Nigerian man', which however drew backlash from users on X.

Njeri Migwi, the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Usikimye, slammed Majimbo for the timing of the video in the wake of the brutal murder of 20-year-old Rita Waeni in Roysambu, Nairobi allegedly by a male Nigerian national who reports revealed was taken into custody.

Her sentiments were supported by X influencer Beth Kasinga amidst the macabre murder which is currently under investigation by authorities.

Majimbo nonetheless issued an apology stating "Oml I was completely unaware of what’s happening in Nigeria. Y'all please forgive my last video that was in very bad taste given the current situation," though Viral Tea noticed an error in her statement as she was meant to refer to events happening in Kenya.

She is the second woman to have come under fire over remarks targeted at Nigerians this week.

On Wednesday, January 17, Kiss FM presenter Sheila Kwamboka, popularly known as Kwambox drew condemnation over the following remarks "Even if you guys are not feeling Nigerians this week, I don't care."

Radio Africa Group (RAG), Kiss FM's parent company was yet to address the remarks formally, though sources who spoke to Viral Tea indicated that there were fewer chances for the media house to take action on the matter.

They termed Kwambox's remarks a 'non-issue' despite the dark turn it took with the backdrop of the controversy being Waeni's murder.
