Wetang'ula Now Named As Witness In DCI Update On Cyrus Jirongo Crash
Earlier reports had indicated that Wetang’ula met with Jirongo on the evening of December 12, 2025, at a restaurant in Karen, Nairobi
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has voluntarily recorded a statement with detectives investigating the tragic road accident that claimed the life of former Lugari Member of Parliament (MP) Cyrus Jirongo.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Wednesday, January 21, confirmed that the inquiry, which is now in its advanced stages, covers the fatal crash that occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway near Karai.
Once complete, the case file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further action. According to DCI, the probe has been wide-ranging, drawing information from multiple sources and statements from 28 individuals, including seven passengers from the ill-fated bus.

"Others include Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula who voluntarily recorded his statement in the early stages of the investigation, Ms. Eunice Chelagat, the wife of Hon. George Khaniri, and a further statement from Hon. George Khaniri himself, a close friend of the late Hon. Jirongo. Hon. Khaniri, together with his wife Eunice, visited the accident scene on the day of the incident and assisted in facilitating the transfer of Hon. Jirongo’s remains from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary to Lee Funeral Home," DCI revealed in a statement.
Autopsy results had confirmed that Jirongo suffered severe crush injuries to the chest, a broken sternum, and lacerations on the heart, liver, and kidneys. The pathologist ruled the cause of death as multiple crush injuries due to blunt force trauma.
The DCI has urged the public, media, and political figures to avoid speculation, emphasizing that unverified statements could interfere with the ongoing investigation and harm the reputations of those cooperating with authorities.
“The DCI remains committed to conducting an impartial, thorough, and expeditious investigation in strict accordance with the law,” the investigative agency added.
Earlier reports had indicated that Wetang’ula met with Jirongo on the evening of December 12, 2025, at a restaurant in Karen, Nairobi, with their discussion lasting about an hour. After Wetang’ula left, Jirongo stayed briefly before departing in his vehicle, which was later involved in the deadly crash.
Investigators are reviewing witness accounts, CCTV footage, and forensic evidence to piece together a precise timeline of events. While authorities stress that the accident appears unintentional, the case’s high-profile nature has drawn significant public and political scrutiny.
The DCI noted that interviewing prominent figures, including Wetang’ula, is standard practice in complex inquiries. Officials have reassured the public that the investigation is being guided strictly by evidence, with no assumptions of foul play at this stage.
Family members and political allies are urging a transparent investigation to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death. Private investigators hired by Jirongo's family had claimed that Jirongo may not have been alone in the vehicle when the fatal crash occurred.
