Outgoing Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has revealed that his Facebook page was hacked on Monday, August 29, the same day elections for Kakamega County are ongoing.

Kenyans were woken up to amazement when the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) deputy party leader asked the county residents to vote for United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate, Cleophas Malala, in the gubernatorial race.

A Facebook post on his verified page contained a photo of the Kenya Kwanza gubernatorial candidate with hashtags (#VoteCleophasWahunguMalala).

The county boss then took to Twitter to reveal that his page was tampered with by what he claimed were "agents of doom".

He added that he had taken up the matter with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

"This is to notify the general public that my Facebook page has been hacked by agents of doom. Ignore any post on my Facebook page as we await DCI to handle the matter and restore it," he tweeted.

Oparanya is one out of many celebrities, media personalities, politicians et al who have had their Facebook pages hacked and details unusual to them shared on their pages.

Facebook has Community Standards and guidelines that inform what is and is not allowed and quickly responds to anyone who compromises community trust and safety. Violations can immediately result in deleted Pages, content and disabled accounts.

The Meta-owned company recommends that you create passwords that are unique and cannot be shared by anyone. For instance, avoid using anything that's personally identifiable, such as your name, phone number, birthdate or address and ensure that it's at least six characters long and use a complex combination of numbers, letters and punctuation marks.

Additionally, avoid using common words or your name and use a unique password that you're not using anywhere else online. Never share your password and for extra security, change your password every six months.

Other steps that are recommended to protect your Facebook account from hackers as it gains more followers is changing your privacy settings to separate your public life from your personal life and removing your personal profile from search engine results.

Activate two-factor authentication and login alerts so that you're alerted if someone logs in to your account from a different device. In the event that your account is hacked, visit facebook.com/hacked immediately to secure your account.

Malala is facing off against six other contenders in the Kakamega elections including Fernandes Barasa of ODM, Shakhalaga Khwa Jirongo of United Democratic Party (UDP), Suleiman Sumba (KANU), Samuel Omukoko of Maendeleo Development Party (MDP), Michael Osundwa and Austin Otieno both independent candidates.
